  2. Definitions • Technology – the use of science to solve practical problems • Microprocessor, the “brain” of every computerized device or tool. A tiny computer chip that receives instructions and carries them out. • Telecommute – to work from home or another location with the help of cell phones, fax machines, and the Internet. • Ethics – the principles and standards we use to decide how to act. • Virus – a program intentionally designed to cause annoyance or damage to computer hardware or software.

  3. Hackers – a person who uses his or her expertise to gain access to other people’s computers to get information illegally or do damage. • Ergonomics –the study of the design of equipment and systems that people use. • Desktop – the main work area on a computer. • Icon – a small picture that represents programs, document files, Web links or other items on the computer

Log on – keying your user name and password • Program – the set of instructions your computer receives in order to carry out its many functions • Application – a software program such as Microsoft Office that let you perform specific tasks such as organizing information, creating reports or printing a picture

  5. Window – an area on the computer screen where an application can be viewed and accessed. • Task bar – located at the bottom of the screen where you can see what window you are working in.

  6. Insertion point – the symbol that shows where you will be entering text or data on your screen. A vertical blinking line. • Shortcut – a keyboard command that allows you to work without the mouse in order to keep both hands on the keyboard. Example Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and Function keys.
