  1. Test Drive CARS 2005! You can use the following shortcut keys to control the demo Advance to the next slide ENTER, or the SPACEBAR (or click the mouse) Return to the previous slide BACKSPACE End a slide show ESC Display the shortcut menu SHIFT+F10 (or right-click)

  2. What is CARS 2005? • Computerized Application and Reference System. • A computerized version of the Automotive Steel Design Manual (ASDM). • Brings together material, design and manufacturing information for automotive designers and engineers. Example Demo

  3. What is under the hood? The CARS engine consists of: • Application Mode - Provides numerical and graphical solutions to the design procedures and equations found in the ASDM. • Reference Mode- Quickly and selectively presents the information found in the ASDM. Example Demo

  4. What are CARS 2005 accessories? • GAS - Geometric Analysis of Sections,Enhances the power of the CARS engine, by calculating geometric section properties for arbitrary thin-walled sections. • MAP- Material Archive Program,Provides easy access to the most frequently used automotive steels, with a full selection of material properties. • KEY- Key to Auto Steel Design,Simplifies CARS startup and operation with automatic selection of design procedures. Example Demo

  5. Why should you drive CARS 2005? • CARS solves complex design problems and increases speed and accuracy of the design process. • Reduces the possibilities of errors and increases productivity by simplifying calculations. • Provides immediate access to reference material. • Helps make the most effective use of steel. Example Demo

  6. CARS Test Drive CARS DESIGN KEY CARS GAS CARS Help CARS MAP CARS Unit Conversion CARS ASDM CARS 2005 Instrument Panel Launch any of the CARS accessories with a single mouse click! Shows this demo. Compute equations, and perform interactive design, with CARS KEY. Offers extensive assistance on CARS features and usage. Use CARS GAS to perform geometric analysis of sections. Select materials from CARS MAP. Is a handy unit conversion utility. The Automotive Steel Design Manual is available online with hyper text links.

  16. Let us go through an example to see how CARS can be used to solve a typical automotive problem....

  17. Make the UltraLight lighter... Problem: Reduce the mass of the front rail and maintain axial capacity. CARS Solution: Drive through the CARS 2005 model to make required design changes, meet structural requirements, and still reduce mass.

  18. The front rail and its connection to the body have a great influence on load transfer. A new UltraLight front rail was created to improve the load transfer by distributing the load along three paths. The front rail is joined directly to the rocker. The dash cross member transfers loads cross-car. The front rail extension carries some of the load directly to the front floor cross member.

  19. UltraLight front rail t = 1.3 mm t = 1.55 mm 51 mm 75.35 mm 75.35 mm Can the hat section be replaced by the hexagonal section while achieving mass reduction and maintaining strength? We will use CARS 2005 to find out...

  20. Information on the equations and design procedures used in this example can be accessed using the online Automotive Steel Design Manual...

  21. First we pick a material from the CARS material database to be used as the default material for all further analyses.

  22. Use GAS to compute the nominal properties of the hat section.

  23. The mass of the hat section (Area * length *mass density) is computed to be 1.16 kg, using t = 1.55 mm

  24. Also compute the effective properties of the hat section...

  25. The effective properties under axial load are calculated using the material properties from MAP.

  26. These nominal and effective properties will be transferred to the CARS design procedures.

  27. Use a CARS 2005 design procedure to calculate the axial capacity of the front rail.

  28. We will use the calculated gas results in the design procedure.

  29. Use the effective properties to compute the axial capacity for the hat section.

  30. Repeat the calculations for the hexagonal section. Compute the nominal properties.

  31. The mass of this member (Area * length * mass density) is computed to be 1.07 kg, using t = 1.3 mm

  32. Compute the effective properties.

  33. The effective properties for the hexagonal section are used to compute the axial capacity of the member.

  34. Summary HAT Section: Thickness: 1.55 mm Axial Capacity: 151,800 N Mass: 1.16 kg HEXAGONAL Section: We find that the hexagonal section can effectively replace the hat section. Thickness: 1.3 mm Axial Capacity: 154,200 N Mass: 1.07 kg

  35. We have achieved a mass reduction of 8% and maintained the axial capacity by following the CARS design procedures.
