Tech. & 1 B. Tech. Projects, 3 M. Tech. Seminars

  4. Objective Activities Completed Educational Programme Initiating M. Tech. specialization in Aerospace Systems Design & Engineering (9 past & 4 current students). Integrated Modelling & Simulation Laboratory Setting up Integrated Modeling & Simulation Laboratory (IMSL), consisting of (a) Software modelling & simulation tools, (b) Hardware-in-Loop Realtime simulators, (c) Educational laboratory setups and (d) A vast collection of sensors, actuators, controllers etc. System Level Studies Facility development for MAV Activities & specific Studies (Hardware-in-Loop Simulator, MAV Wind Tunnel, System Integration Studies) Design and development of an Autonomous MAV (Instrumented Flying Platform, Videography Platform) Initiating research in the area of Design Methodologies, especially MDO (MDO Framework, WingOPt, 3-D Duct, Surrogate Modelling). Awareness Creation Conducting Workshops & Short Courses in specialized topics of interest to Design Methodologies (8 Workshops and CEPs in MDO, IMS & MAV). Setting up of a Special Interest Group (SIG) for aerospace designers and offering National and International platforms to meet and exchange of ideas (5 Brainstorming Sessions in SE Education, MDO and IMS). Promoting design in educational institutions through many measures. (14 Courses on Design, Modelling & Simulation and Design, Build & Fly). Publications 7 B. Tech. projects, 20 M. Tech. dissertations, 4 Ph. D. seminars, 10 papers in National conferences & 15 papers in international conferences.   5. AR&DB Grant for Phase-I Rs. 192 Lakhs for 5.5 Years. Rs. 3.79 Lakhs as Unspent Balance Rs. 33 Lakhs Realtime Simulation Facility by ISRO Rs. 21.48 Lakhs Equipment by IITB 3500 Sq. Ft. Space, Other Support from IITB

  6. Acknowledgments • AR&DB for vision & generous financial support • IIT Bombay for believing, support & providing infrastructure • Aero. Deptt. faculty for cooperation • Aero. organizations e.g. ADA, ISRO, VSSC, DRDL, HAL, ADE, G-FAST, NIAS, IAT etc. for hand-holding and participating in various programmes of CASDE • All past and current members of MC, SPC and JPC for their constructive role during various reviews • Its long list of students for taking up challenging problems & delivering more than expected of them A closure report in the standard AR&DB format has been prepared and circulated. Once it is approved by SPC, it will be submitted to AR&DB to formally close Phase-I of CASDE.

Vision for CASDE Phase-II Broad Objectives • To consolidate gains made from Phase-I • To be a hub of knowledge in the area of Systems Design (SD) & Systems Engineering (SE) • To build up core competencies in select areas • To provide intellectual support to Aerospace industry in select areas for their on-going & future projects • To continue providing specialist manpower in the areas of SD & SE

Phase-II Proposal Preparation • Nov. ‘02 – First draft of Phase-II submitted to ARDB • Full ARDB Support (Rs. 80 Lakhs) for 2 Years • July ’03 – SPC approved a revised proposal for Phase-II • Full ARDB Support (Rs. 110 Lakhs) for 2 Years • Sep. ’03 – JPC suggested modification to funding model • Start process of self sustenance to gradually reduce dependence on ARDB • A few activities to become fully self-supporting • This model to be in place for 5 more years • Oct. ’03 – Subcommittee approved one of the models • Jan. ’04 – Technical Committee recommended Phase-II • Feb. ’04 – ARDB sanctioned Phase-II of CASDE • Apr. ’04 – CASDE Phase-II started functioning

  9. Salient Features of Proposal-1 Centre Element – Basic Infrastructure & Faculty Group • Scope of Centre Element • M. Tech. specialization in Systems Design & Engg. (SDE) • Software Tools for Systems Engg. Teaching Aids • Maintenance/Upgrade of Office Infrastructure • Support for holding meetings, workshops, seminars etc. • Infrastructural Support for invitees,visitors and focused project • Support for preparation of course modules, meeting documents, agenda papers etc. • Primarily supported from ARDB grant. Total need projected at Rs. 75 Lakhs for 5 Years. Rs. 60 Lakhs from ARDB; Rs. 15 Lakhs from other sources from 3rd year onwards.

Salient Features of Proposal-2 Projects Elements – Various Generic & Focused Tasks • Scope of Project Element - Generic • Surrogate Modelling & Sensitivity Analysis • CFD Based Optimization • Design Methodology & Path Planning for MAVs Fully supported from ARDB grant. Total need projected at Rs. 25 Lakhs as recurring cost for a period of 5 years. Rs. 20 Lakhs projected as one time cost of High End Computing Facility. • Scope of Project Element - Focused • Specific project proposals to other agencies (including DRDO Labs & other panels of ARDB) • In broad areas of MAV development & MDO Studies Primarily supported from non-ARDB grant. Infrastructure support provided by CASDE, through its Centre Element
