How it affects the tourism trade? Persitant Problems in Kenya
The number of tourists visit Kenya has decreased to fewer than 900 000 in 1998. The reasons for this can be grouped into 2 main categories: natural impacts and human impacts. As well, in the late 1990s, Kenya found it had competition for tourists seeking safari vacations. Intro
A series of natural disasters struck Kenya in 1997-98 Torrential rainfall washed out bridges, damaged roads and destroyed crops. Washed out roads meant that tourists could not reach certain parks or beach resorts, as a result tourists stayed away in droves. High water levels lead to epidemics of malaria and cholera. The health care system in Kenya was overwhelmed. Kenya is currently suffering its worst drought in living memory Natural Impacts
The human impacts on the natural environment of Kenya have had a more severe and long lasting effect on the tourism industry. So much so, some people question if the tourists will ever come back. Human Impacts
Security issues like tribal clashes have also posed a threat to the industry. The most recent Al-shabaab threats and attacks have also been a challenge to this industry though the government has done so much to curb the situation Terrorist bombing on August 7th, 1998 on an American Embassy in Nairobi killing 243 people. In Tanzania, another attack killed 10 people. As a result, the US implemented a Travel Advisory to US citizens. Nairobi Mall bombing in September 2013 killing 61 civilians and 6 security guards. 1. Poor infrastructure. • Kenya has very poor roads that hinder the access of the areas rich in wildlife. This has made the industry hard to develop in the country. • Poor government support. • The government does not give enough support to this industry especially in terms of allocation of funds. In addition to this there is poor encouragement from the government to the people to invest in tourism. • Lack of capital. • This is normally a big challenge because any individual or organization that wants to invest in this industry must have capital in terms of money as well as other resources such as land and labour. • Bribery is not uncommon in African governments • Crime increased; roving bandits robbed tourists on safari in isolated areas 2. Increase in human population has also led human encroachment in the wildlife habitats such as forests and grasslands. This leads to human-wildlife conflicts resulting in the migration of some animal species from their habitats. This has adversely affected the tourist industry in Kenya. 3. Agricultural Impacts
This is repeatedly reported from the national parks and game reserves where poachers kill the animals for their meat as well as for trade in some of their parts such as the ivory and the rhinoceros horns. Some people who rank high in the society such as the politicians have also been known to take part in this illegal businesses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SMNk04wXgg 4. Destruction of wildlife
Low Levels of technology have also been a challenge. • This is because these tourist areas are not covered with things like mobile phone network, internet and also radio and television networks. • For tourists from developed countries, these conditions are too hard to cope up with and may make Kenya unfavorable for the tourists. 5.
