  2. Who are we? • Marguerite Nelson – Elementary Grades Mathematics Specialist • Marcia Cole – Middle Grades Mathematics Specialist • Monica Bibbs – High School Mathematics Specialist • Simeon Sanders – Director of Mathematics

Who do we serve? • Approximately 45,000 students • African-American – 83.4% • Hispanic – 9.9% • White – 5.0% • Asian/Pacific Islander – 1.6% • American Indian/Alaskan Naïve – 0.1% • 40+ Site-Based Mathematics Professional Developers • All teachers of mathematics for DC Public Schools • Principals • In some cases, charter schools • Transient population

Mathematics Program Standards-based curriculum that is supported with by the following text series: • Pre-K through 5 • Everyday Mathematics • Grades 6 through 8 • Connected Mathematics • Grades 9 though 12 • McDougal Littell – Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II • Key Curriculum Press – Precalculus and Calculus • Pearson Prentice Hall - Statistics

Mathematics Program (cont.) • Inquiry-based learning is the model we use in conjunction with our textbook series. • Less emphasis on memorizing facts and information. • More emphasis on using curriculum tools in the application of inquiry such as learning how to develop a context for questions and how to ask different levels of questions in a effort to encourage students to construct knowledge.

  6. Challenges • Lack of cohesive vision of mathematics within the organization – departmental goals and district goals are not in sync. • Site-based management and other school programs dictate the mathematical direction of the school.

Future Plans • Hire and train additional mathematics coaches to service 51 schools that do not have a mathematics coach • Establish a resource center for teachers of mathematics • Professional development opportunities would continue to be built into a course format • Creating mathematics assessments for Pre-K through 2, Geometry and Algebra II • Summer Institutes for Mathematics • Establish a cadre of teacher trainers through train-the-trainer institutes • And the list goes on…………..BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
