DEFINITION • Drains are surgical devices meant to divert body fluids from one part to the other. • CLASSIFICATION • -Active drains- redivac • -Passive drains-corrugated red rubber drain • Internal- ventriculo-peritoneal VP shunt, internal anastomosis stent • External- NG tube, urethral catheter

  3. CLASSIFICATION CONTD • Permanent- VP shunt, gastro-jejunalanastomosis, some stents • Temporary- NG tube, urethral catheter, redivac

  4. COMPLICATIONS • Migration • Dislodgement • Fistula-formation • Bleeding • Retention • Blockage • Sepsis
