  1. What is Diabetes Prevention Week? • Diabetes Prevention Week is a campaign from NHS England, Diabetes UK and Public Health England. It aims to: • Raise awareness of the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme – with the public and healthcare professionals (specifically GPs, Practice Nurses and Pharmacists) • Raise awareness of the causes of Type 2 diabetes • Raise awareness of the complications associated with Type 2 diabetes • Raise awareness of at risk groups – particularly BME populations

  2. Key messages – for patients and the public • Type 2 diabetes can cause serious long-term health problems; • You can prevent Type 2 diabetes by eating a healthy, balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly • Find out your risk of Type 2 diabetes by using the Diabetes UK Know Your Risk Score at https://riskscore.diabetes.org.uk/start • If you think you or a family member may be at risk, ask at your GP practice about your local Healthier You service • There are some groups at higher risk: • Men • Those from some segments of the BAME community • Overweight • Those with a family history • Your ethnicity may put you at a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes

  3. Key messages – for healthcare professionals • Type 2 diabetes is one of the biggest healthcare challenges of our time. • There are some groups at higher risk of Type 2 diabetes: • Men • Those from some segments of the BAME community • Overweight • Those with a family history • The Healthier You: Diabetes Prevention Programme is a lifestyle change programme which helps those at risk of Type 2 diabetes to reduce their risk by helping participants to manage their weight, eat more healthily and be more active • Refer eligible patients to the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (via their GP Practice)

  4. How the campaign works • GP Practices, Pharmacies and other NHS and community organisations are encouraged to order a free Diabetes Prevention Week toolkit. • The toolkit includes everything a local practice or organisation needs to raise awareness of Type 2 diabetes prevention during the week of 1-7 April 2019. • The easiest thing for local organisations to do is to display all the toolkit items for patients, the public and internal staff to see during the week of 1-7 April 2019. • However, if local organisations wish to do more to mark the week then they are encouraged to do so. Last year, some organisations ran special events, roadshows, displays in supermarkets etc. • Toolkits are available to order from the PHE Campaign Resource Centre from late January 2019. They will be dispatched from mid-February 2019.

  5. The toolkit • The physical toolkit includes: • Information about the campaign • Leaflets • Posters • ‘How do you measure up?’ tape measures • Bunting • ‘Ask me about Diabetes Prevention Week’ Stickers • The digital toolkit includes: • Social media images • Videos; including an animation about the NHS DPP which can be shown in public areas • Leaflets in other languages (to print locally if required) • Communications colleagues will also be given up to date statistics and regional press release templates to assist with local media

  6. Calls to action • For patients / public: • Go to www.riskscore.diabetes.co.uk to get an estimate of your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes • Take up the offer of a free NHS Health Check which will assess your risk of diabetes and other diseases • If you think you may be at risk, speak to your GP practice • If you are invited to join the NHS DPP, take up the offer • Find out more about the NHS DPP at www.england.nhs.uk/ndpp or ask a member of your GP practice team • For healthcare professionals: • Keep the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme in mind as a treatment option for eligible patients • Find out what is happening in your area in regards to the NHS DPP • Order a toolkit and/or take part in local events to promote the NHS DPP

  7. How communications colleagues can support Diabetes Prevention Week 2019 • Encourage GP practices and other local organisations in your patch to order a free Diabetes Prevention Week Toolkit. • Toolkits will be available to pre-order from late January 2019 via the PHE Campaign Resource Centre. • Toolkits will be dispatched on a first come, first served basis. • Alternatively, you can make a bulk order on behalf of all the GP practices and/or other organisations in your patch by using the bulk order form. • There are two toolkits to choose from; one with generic Type 2 diabetes prevention messages, and one which also points to a local NHS DPP service. Liaise with your local NHS DPP leads to find out which one will be most suitable for your area.

  8. How communications colleagues can support Diabetes Prevention Week 2019 (cont.) • Support local organisations in running their own events during the week including helping them to choose the most appropriate messages for their area • Promote Diabetes Prevention Week in local bulletins, intranets, websites etc • Join the conversation on social media using #PreventingType2 across your own social media channels (use the assets in the digital toolkit) • Run your own internal Diabetes Prevention Week events for colleagues • Identify case studies to showcase in regional press activity • Log activity and feed into the national evaluation of the campaign

  9. Highlights from last year’s campaign… • Nearly 5,000 Diabetes Prevention Week toolkits were ordered in just over a month. • Completions of the DUK Know Your Risk tool were up 224% compared to the same period in the previous month. • Views of the NHSE diabetes prevention web pages were up 65% compared to the same period the previous year and up 22% compared to the same period the previous month. • The campaign helped to achieve national media coverage with an eight minute slot on BBC Breakfast.

  10. Highlights from last year’s campaign… • Regional coverage spanned print, TV and radio, including York Press, East Midlands Today and BBC Radio Tees. It also generated a number of new patient case studies for the NHS DPP. • The three months following the campaign (May-July 2018) saw the most referrals into the Diabetes Prevention Programme in one month to date. • 85% of those surveyed agreed that the campaign helped to raise awareness of Type 2 diabetes with patients and the public • 81% of those surveyed agreed that the campaign helped to raise awareness of associated complications and at-risk groups with patients and the public • 77% of those surveyed agreed that the campaign helped to raise awareness of the NHS DPP with healthcare professionals.

  11. Highlights from last year’s campaign… 48% of survey respondents said that they engaged with over 100 members of the public as a result of their Diabetes Prevention Week activity; 17% engaged with over 500 and 9% engaged with over 1,000.

  12. Examples of activity from 2018 We held two workplace Healthier You lunches where we invited colleagues to make a healthy lunch and bring it in to share with colleagues We ran ‘at risk clinics’ and promoted the NHS Health Check… We used social media and our trust website to provide diabetes advice and information, as well as to promote an event we ran at a local supermarket to speak to the public about type 2 diabetes We ran Silver Star diabetes prevention roadshows held in Derby and Chesterfield We set up a diabetes prevention stand in the reception linking to the NHS health trainers too with their resources, promoting a healthier lifestyle We used Diabetes Prevention Week as a platform to raise awareness of diabetes both internally and to our residents. We used the posters on the back of toilet doors, noticeboards, kitchens and areas of high footfall…I wrote an article to go into the staff newsletter to again raise the profile of preventing diabetes, what simple steps to take to lower your risk and also a link again to the Type 2 diabetes risk self-assessment test. All of the libraries did displays with diabetes books and Wokingham Council did an information stand at their council offices
