How Is TMJ Diagnosed

Migraine headaches and TMJ disorder can often be challenging to diagnose, mainly because the symptoms are similar. To accurately diagnose TMJ, your doctor may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial specialist. The specialist evaluates your jaw joint and muscle movement, listens for clicks or popping sounds as you open and close your mouth, tests how far you can open your mouth, and may take a dental X-ray to check for signs of damage or deterioration in the joint.

  2. HOW IS TMJ DIAGNOSED? Migraine headaches and TMJ disorder can often be challenging to diagnose, mainly because the symptoms are similar. To accurately diagnose TMJ, your doctor may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial specialist. The specialist evaluates your jaw joint and muscle movement, listens for clicks or popping sounds as you open and close your mouth, tests how far you can open your mouth, and may take a dental X-ray to check for signs of damage or deterioration in the joint.

  3. WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA? Sleep apnea is when breathing stops and repeatedly starts during sleep. It is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually due to the collapse of soft tissue at the back of your throat. When you breathe through your nose during sleep, the airway is blocked, and breathing is interrupted. This can lead to snoring, loud gasping or choking sounds, and a lack of oxygen to the brain.

  4. WHAT IS MIGRAINE? Migraine is a headache disorder that can cause severe throbbing or pulsing pain on one side of the head. It is often accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. In some cases, people may also experience an aura—a warning sign before the onset of the migraine attack—which can include visual changes such as seeing spots, flashes of light, or zig-zag lines. Migraine is more common in women than men and usually begins during early adulthood.
