What is TMJ? • TemporomandibularJoint Disorder • Limited range of motion in the jaw • Joint is overused and causes the joint to burst, which makes the disk to move out of place and make the smooth end of the jaw and the skull in direct contact with each other. • Stage 1: one joint • Stage 2: both joints • Stage 3: Permanent breakage

  3. Causes? • Fear • Stress (extreme) • Habits/Posture (grinding teeth, eating) • Wisdom teeth.

  4. Symptoms • Pain when talking or eating • Migraines • “Yips”

  5. Dieting

  6. Facts? • 35% of Americans in the United States will obtain these disorder • 80% of the Americans that are affected are women. 20% are men. • Ages 18-30 are affected more. Ages 8-17 and-31-52 are less affected less • Researchers & doctors build a “replica” of the joint and implanted them into humans in the early 1990’s. The trial failed and led to permanent breakage (0% Success in experimentation).

  7. Cure During TMJ? • Permanent Cure…none for now. • Hope: Stem Cell Research • Temporary, yes • Steroids (causes less inflammation and creates a liquid coating for the disk realign back into place). Last about 1 day – 5 years for stage 1 and 2. Stage 3 is impossible.

  8. Prevention • Improve Habits • Massage • Exercise • Meditation • Yoga (Stress Free) • Expressive • Reflection
