  2. Lecture #03 Axial Loads – Statically Indeterminate Members • 1. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this lesson you should be able to: • Classify centrically axially loaded members as determinate or indeterminate. • Use geometry of deformation relationships to supplement equilibrium equations to solve for internal forces in statically indeterminate centrically axially loaded members.

  3. 2. Orientation • In CE301 you often applied the equations of equilibrium to solve for internal forces in structural members. Unfortunately not all engineering problems lend themselves to such straight forward solutions. Redundant support conditions often create statically indeterminate situations. In these cases, engineers must use there knowledge of how materials behave to supplement the equations of equilibrium.

Key Definitions • Statically Determinate: A structural member is said to be statically determinate if number of unknown internal forces and external reactions equal the number of equilibrium equations that the member satisfies. • Statically Indeterminate: A structural member is said to be statically indeterminate if the number of unknown internal and external forces and external reactions exceed the number of equilibrium equations the member satisfies. • Geometry of Deformation: Knowledge of the relationship between stress and strain for a given material allows engineers to use information about deformation to calculate stresses and thus forces within members. These relationships can supplement the equations of equilibrium and allow engineers to solve statically indeterminate problems.
