  2. What is socialization? • It is “the lifelong process through which we learn all the knowledge, skills, and attitudes we need to survive and prosper.” • Basically, how we develop

  3. Agents • The organizations, individuals and institutions that help our social development • They include: family, school, peers, media, religion, the workplace & total institutions (ie; prisons)

  4. What do we learn from each? • Family: communication, behaviour, values • School: coping with formal rules, gender roles • Peers: sexual attitudes, gender roles • Media: personal expectations, gender roles

  5. Religion: social responsibility, afterlife, morals • Workplace: behaviour, procedure, respect • Total institutions: erase previous habits & teach new ones

  6. Maslow – Hierarchy of Needs • Studied motivation & how we decide which needs to fulfill first • Studied well-known people who he believed led fulfilled lives • Believed you had to fulfill one need before moving up to the next • Believed we never stop striving for the next level
