  1. NARFE Was Founded in 1921 • The National Active and Retired • Federal Employees • Association (NARFE) has • been working to safeguard • the benefits of federal • employees, retirees and • their survivors since 1921.

  2. Today,NARFE … • continues to fight against any and all proposals • to cut or eliminate your benefits with a team of • lobbyists, a network of grass-roots activists and • a member-supported political action committee.

Did You Know? • • It may surprise you to know that Congress can • change your retirement benefits, and they have • done so several times in the past. • • The Fiscal Commission also has • proposed freezing federal pay; • reducing the work force; replacing • current annuity computation • formulas, which will reduce your • pensions; and reducing federal • retiree health benefits.

  4. Why NARFE? • • NARFE exists to fight on your behalf to • prevent these cuts to your hard-earned • benefits. • • NARFE also sends you alerts about these • threats, and we make it easy for you to • contact your congressional representatives • to voice your views.

Legislative Accomplishments • With NARFE on the job, we have succeeded in: • • Preventing any reduction to your retirement • and health benefits since 1993; • • Making improvements to the TSP, including • a Roth option and ensuring inheritance rights • of surviving spouses; • • Allowing agencies to re-employ federal • retirees on a limited, part-time basis • without offset of their annuities. • And that’s not all.

Legislative Accomplishments • We’ve also succeeded in: • Permitting FERS employees to credit their • unused sick leave toward retirement; • • Ensuring that government retirees not eligible • for Social Security received a one-time $250 • refundable tax credit for the 2009 tax year; • • Blocking attempts by Congress to • deny federal workers a modest 1.4 • percent salary increase in 2011.

Our Current Focus • NARFE’s current focus includes: • • Opposing the proposal to freeze federal salaries, • and other efforts to reduce or eliminate your benefits; • • Ensuring that federal employees and retirees are • not unfairly singled out in plans to reduce the deficit; • • Developing initiatives that would help lower the • skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs; • • Ensuring that the FEHBP is safeguarded • while the health care reform law is • Implemented. • We are also …

Current Focus,cont. • • Supporting civilian/military pay parity; • • Ensuring that all federal retirees have equity • with Social Security recipients in years when no • COLA is expected; • • Providing federal workers the option of reducing • their annuities to increase benefits for their • survivors; and • • Setting the record straight on the • contributions and dedication of federal • workers to public service.
