Poetry Terms • Assonance: repetition of similar vowel sounds followed by different consonant sounds • rabbit and whacked • purple and curtain • Consonance: repetition of consonants in middle or at end of words • pitter and patter • Alliteration is consonance at the beginning of words!
Poetry Terms • Onomatopoeia: word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning • Crackle, fizz, pop, click, zoom • Pun: plays on multiple meanings of a word OR on two homophones or words that sound alike; humorous • Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. • Santa’s helpers are subordinate clauses.
Poetry Term • Free Verse: poem without particular meter or rhyme scheme • Until mid-1800s, all poems in English were written in strict forms of meter • Poets began to “rebel” and experiment • Free verse sounds more like everyday spoken language—but poets pay close attention to pauses (punctuation) and balance between short/long phrases.
