1st Indian Empire, they were influenced to unite after defeating Alexander the Great & conquer most of India. • Strong government kept control by dividing the Empire into districts controlled by loyal generals. • Had a command economy & farmers paid taxed & rent for land. • King Ashoka spreads Empire but becomes disgusted by war & becomes Buddhist. • Hinduism remains an Indian religion but Buddhism continues to spread outward with the help of Ashoka & trade. • Ashoka dies & the Empire falls apart.
India re-unites in 320 CE under Chandra Gupta, starting a new Empire. • A strong push back into Hinduism. • Later Emperors expand the Empire & enters a Golden Age = a time of peace, development, & advances. • Late 400’s a group invades & ends the empire. • Golden Age = trade increases, economy strong, people prospered, traditions developed. • New castes are formed in Hinduism. • Cotton, spices, ceramics, Ideas, & religion spread through Silk Road.
