  2. The Apprentice • What is The Apprentice? • Reality show with business challenges • 2 teams starting with 8-9 people each • Teams select a project manager for each task • Losing team has one member fired after each task until only one person remains • Final contestant becomes “The Apprentice”

  9. The amazing race • What is The Amazing Race? • Teams of 2 (relatives or friends) race around the world. • Last team to complete a leg of the race is usually eliminated. • Winner is determined by winner of the last leg of the race.

  10. The amazing race • How I Adapt The Amazing Race • Teams of 2 or 3 students • Set a certain number of weeks • Each team starts at the same time • Teams are timed each week • Winner is determined by shortest cumulative time for all weeks

The amazing race • Sample of The Amazing Race • A “Detour” presents your team with a decision between two tasks, each with its own pros and cons. • In this “Detour” choose between “Architects” and “Buildings”. • In “Architects”, take the sheet of paper and fill in the missing blanks. Inaccurate answers will receive a time penalty. • In “Buildings”, take the sheet of paper and fill in the missing blanks. Inaccurate answers will receive a time penalty.

  13. The amazing race • Sample of The Amazing Race • In this “Route Info” task your team will revisit a previous challenge. Your task is to successfully complete the Paper Table challenge. Your table must be made from the materials provided and hold one textbook to move on to the next task. When your team has completed the task correctly you will receive your next clue.

  14. The amazing race • Sample of The Amazing Race • A “Roadblock” provides two activities. Before seeing the assignments, teams must decide which member should do which task. For example, a roadblock will ask “Who wants matching?” and “Who wants fill in the blank?” After deciding who will do the tasks, students open an envelope and complete the assignment independently. Assignments are timed and wrong answers result in a time penalty. When both students have completed their tasks, the team receives the next clue.

  15. rookies • What is Rookies? • Remember your first day at your new job? Now imagine being a police officer. Rookies, shot on location in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana and Tampa, Florida, puts viewers in the squad car as each rookie heads out on patrol for the first time.

The academy • What is The Academy? • The Academy is a reality television series that provides a behind-the-scenes look at police recruits of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Academy as they go through an 18-week training course to become deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

  17. mythbusters • What is Mythbusters? • The show’s hosts, special effect experts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, use elements of scientific method to test the validity of rumors, myths, movie scenes, adages, internet videos, and news stories.

  18. mythbusters • How I Adapt Mythbusters • Students work individually or in groups of two, using problem solving/critical thinking skills to brainstorm, design, test, and redesign hands-on projects while watching an episode of Mythbusters that relates to the challenge.

  19. mythbusters • Sample of Mythbusters • Watercraft • Watched episode Sinking Titanic Episode 11 (January 25, 2004) • Watercraft Video • IVVC's 2010-2011 Drafting & Design class attempted the second Mythbuster Monday challenge of the year by designing, building, and testing a boat made from paper cups, duct tape, straws, and plastic wrap.   20. mythbusters • Sample of Mythbusters • Paper Table • Watched episode Alaska Special 2 Episode 11 5 (April 15, 2009) • Paper Table Video • IVVC's 2010-2011 Drafting & Design class started its first Mythbuster Monday challenge of the year by designing, building, and testing paper tables. Students were given 6 sheets of newspaper, 1 foot of masking tape, and a cardboard table top. The supports for the table were made out of newspaper only. Realistically speaking … • How Can You Adapt Reality? • Pop culture makes it easy to connect with students even if they do not watch the shows. • Projects that involve collaborative learning are fun and engaging for students and are critically important for their educational development. • Ideas can apply for any academic or CTE classroom.
