  2. Why Should We Have Procedures in Our Classroom?

  3. Procedures are a part of life. They allow complex operations to run smoothly with minimal confusion, low stress, and less wasted time. • Airports • Driving • Restaurants • Movies • School Where else are procedures practiced?

  4. Classroom and Academic Expectations

  5. Classroom Expectations • The atmosphere in this classroom will be formal and academic, but comfortable. • Students will work hard, learn biology, and enjoy the process. • If a visitor walked into our classroom during the day, what should they see?

  6. I expect students to do the following things to make sure the classroom runs smoothly: • Attend class, and arrive on time. • Have materials ready when the bell rings. • Listen when others are speaking. • Follow directions the first time they are given. • Get permission before speaking. • Be polite and respectful toward each other. • Stay on-task and focused on biology.

  7. Academic Expectations • Come to class on time and have materials ready. • Follow teacher’s directions and complete assignments. • Work hard and enjoy the process. • Do your best. • Do not complain; it poisons the atmosphere.

  8. Daily Procedures

  9. Entering the Classroom Procedure • Enter the room quickly and quietly. • Pick up handouts on the bellwork table. • Get materials and be seated. • Read the bellwork assignment posted on the board and start working. • If you finish the bellwork assignment early, work on something else quietly. • Quietly, patiently wait for instruction.

  10. Bellwork Procedure • Pick up handouts, be seated, and gather materials for class. • Read the bellwork assignment on the board and start working. • Do not wait for the teacher or the bell. • If you finish the bellwork assignment early, find something quiet to work on while others are finishing.

  11. What is bellwork? • Reading the handouts or worksheet directions • Current events assignment • Getting materials ready • Content discussion in table groups • Reading assignment • Writing assignment

  12. When you finish work early . . . • quietly read a book. • organize your planner or homework. • use your hand held computer for academic work. • sit quietly. • do a puzzle. • work on homework. • wait patiently.

  13. Daily Schedule • Bellwork assignment • Daily objective and agenda • Teacher–instructions/Modeling • Student–guided instruction/Practice • Assessment/Closure

  14. Class Opening Procedures I. Bellwork assignment time A. Students work on bellwork B. Teacher takes attendance, returns papers and checks on individual students as needed. II. After the bellwork assignment A. Teacher announces daily/weekly agenda. B. Teacher discusses returned papers/feedback. C. Bellwork follow up. D. Daily lesson begins.

  15. Tardy Procedure (1) • Enter the classroom quietly, pick up the daily handouts, and join in the classroom activities with minimal disruption. • You must fill out a pink “tardy form” explaining the reason for the tardy. The teacher will provide the form and you will turn it in by the end of the class period.

  16. Tardy Procedure (2) • If you accumulate 3 tardy forms or more in one grading period, you will have a consequence (detention with teacher and/or a phone call to parents). • If you accumulate 4 tardy forms or more in one grading period, an office referral will be written with the tardy forms attached. • If you are more than 10 minutes late to class (unexcused), it will be counted as an unexcused absence.

  17. Absence Procedure • When you are absent, check with your table group to find out what you missed. Do not ask the teacher. • If you are missing work from an absence, the teacher will let you know what you are missing and provide the materials needed. • You will have until the end of the week to complete your missed work.

  18. Listening to/Responding to Questions • When we are having class discussions, raise your hand to be called on and actively listen to whoever is speaking. • Teacher will give specific instructions when students are to call out answers without first raising their hands. • Ask only questions that are relevant to the lesson. • Be respectful of all comments and ideas, even if they differ from yours.

  19. Working Together in Groups • Each student in a cooperative group will have a task which will be assigned by teacher or determined by group members. • Example of tasks:- recorder- presenter- materials person- clean up person- encourager- leader–keep group on task

  20. Getting the Class’ Attention The teacher will say, “Listen up” or “I need your attention” and I will hold up my hand. When you see my hand you are to 1) stop what you are doing. 2) look at the teacher. 3) raise your hand until the class is silent.

  21. Walking in the Hall Procedure When we are walking in the hall (fire drills, writing lab, outdoors) • Stay with the group. • Go quickly and quietly to the destination.

  22. End of the Day Dismissal Procedure • Hand in daily work. • Put away materials. Make sure desk area is neat and trash is picked up. • When the bell rings, be seated and look at the teacher (All students must be seated). • Teacher dismisses class. • Push in chairs and proceed quickly and quietly out the door.

  23. Classroom Rules

  24. Classroom Rules • Follow teacher’s directions. • Do not disrupt class. • Be polite and courteous to others. • Stay seated and on task. • Do not throw or toss anything. • Keep hands and objects to yourself. • No profanity. • Follow teacher’s directions.

  25. Classroom Consequences • Verbal warning • Seating change • Send to buddy room • Send to office • Conference with teacher • Call parents • Other: detention, action plan form, SIT referral, behavior contract

  26. Behavior Intervention • Sit in safe seat • Sent out of the classroom • Calls to parents • Office referral • Work with others to develop a behavior plan • Create action plan to determine a better behavior

  27. Students Leaving the Classroom • Get permission from the teacher without disrupting class. • You must have a hall pass to leave the room. • Teacher will not sign passes to go to your car.

  28. Bathroom Use • The best time for bathroom use is during passing period. • You should not leave class to use the bathroom unless it is truly necessary. • You may use the restroom 3 times per grading period without a penalty. • You must get permission from the teacher without disrupting class. • Only person at a time will use the bathroom.

  29. Student’s Sudden Illness • Tell teacher where you are going. • Go to the nurse or restroom. • Follow up with the teacher when you are better. Note: You should not be “suddenly ill” very often.

  30. Safety Drills Where do you go in case of a fire drill?

  31. Fire Drill • Exit through North Commons doors. • Go the parking lot. • Make sure there is room for an emergency vehicle to pull up to the school. • Wait until you are called back inside. • Walk quickly and quietly back to the classroom. • Get seated and quickly return to the classroom task.

  32. Tornado • Stay in the classroom. • Take shelter under desks if necessary. • Wait for directions from teacher. • When drill is over, quickly return to the learning task.

  38. Teaching Procedures

  39. Procedure to Teach Procedures • The teacher will explain the importance of procedures. • The teacher will explain the specific procedure. (Explain) • Teacher and students will model, rehearse, and discuss the procedure. (Rehearse) • Teacher and students will practice procedures to be sure they are carried out properly. (Reinforce)

  40. Thank You!!! Thank you for following the classroom procedures. This will allow us to have a wonderful, creative, and productive year in biology class with minimal stress and wasted time. What other procedures should be added to our classroom list?

  41. Other Procedures • Test taking procedures • Using lab equipment • Textbooks • Listening to announcements
