  2. What is the WCCS? • Created during WWI for soldiers, sailors, and communities • Main Focus: Provide leisure and recreational opportunities for people, mainly soldiers and sailors, during the war • Needed for social needs of the soldiers and to keep them emotionally sane • Soldiers away from family, friends, and customary recreation • It was believed that the boosting of morale through recreational activities was the reason for winning the war • Became “Playground and Recreation Association of America”

  3. How Has it Contributed to Leisure/ Recreation? • Playground and Recreation Association of America united with the WCCS to provide leaders for the recreational activities • The PRAA developed the National Physical Education Service as well • This created teaching for recreation and emphasized physical education • The WCCS and it’s counterparts such as the NPES and PRAA provided boosted morale and stress relief for servicemen. • It built a foundation for many of the recreational programs that we have in today’s society, and shows us how essential leisure and recreation is to our lives.
