  2. Ernest Hemingway Section 3 of language & literature by Angelica Sanchez

  3. Hemingway’s Life • Was born on July 21,1899. • His mother injected conservative Midwestern values and music, but Hemingway disliked his mother and placed her “..the dark queen of Hemingway’s inner world.” • In July 1917 Hemingway tried to join the army but because of his poor vision, he couldn’t he was able to become an ambulance driver for the Red Cross.

  4. 1920: Started working as a freelance writer for the Toronto Star. • 1921-1928: Lived in Paris where he got most inspiration for his writings. • His travelings had inspired his writings; traveled to the Genoa Economic conference, to Italian war sites, to Constantinople to observe the Greco - Turkish war, and a peace conference in Lausanne. • Met a writer named Ezra Pound who helped him learn how to write in a compressed, imagist style. • May 1922: Begin to publish his poetry and fiction. • December 1922: Hemingway’s first wife had packed his manuscripts and other writings, but the suitcase got stolen. Hemingway had only a few stories(My Old Man and Up In Michigan) and poems left and never had forgiven his wife. • 1923: Published his first book, Three Stories and Ten Poems • 1924: Published his second book, In Our Time

  5. BullFighting • Saw one of the best bullfighters in spain. • Becomes fascinated with it and felt like it wasn’t a sport, but a dispute between man and beast. This also becomes inspiration for his book, The Sun Also Rises.

  6. Hemingway and Fitzgerald • March and June 1925: Met F. Scott Fitzgerald and felt like writing a novel himself. • Fitzgerald felt like Hemingway needed a new woman to write a new book. (Hemingway married 4 times)

  7. The Sun Also Rises • July 1925: Had found inspiration for characters for his new book. Harold Loeb(a writer), was his inspiration for Robert Cohn, Lady Duff Twysden was his inspiration for Lady Brett Ashley. There was a fierce competition between the males for Twysden that turned into a fierce episode. Hemingway took notes and it became a draft for his book. • Original title was called Fiesta. • October 22: The Sun Also Rises had very mixed reviews. Reviewerss felt that the novel was disgusting and that the characters were too shallow while other reviewers praise the writing style and the power that the book had.

  8. Writings • 1928: The beginning of A Farewell to Arms which is set during the Italian campaign of World War 1. • End of 1934: Hemingway felt offended that his recent work had not had large sales and great reviews. • Early 1939: For Whom The Bell Tolls became his next working novel. • October 1940: Had the best reviews since his early book A Farewell to Arms.

  9. Plane Crash!?!? :o • Newspapers had mistakenly thought that the Hemingways had died in a plane accident while flying to Africa since their plane had actually crashed. • It was mistaken again because the second pla plane that the Hemingways boarded on was caught on fire, though Ernest Hemingway was injured worse. • Later on Hemingway went into depression. (Oh yeah Hemingway supported Fidel Castro and remained on good terms with him after the fall of the Batista government.

  10. SUICIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • In April Hemingway suffered more depression & anxiety. • July 2nd Hemingway went to the basement to get a shotgun and committed suicide. (His family was known for having many suicides). • The world was shocked and President John F. Kennedy had even made a statement saying how Hemingway was a great American literary star.
