  1. Our eyes are one of the most important sense organs that enable us to see the world. The eye is essentially a bundle of fibrous tissues, spindled together in layers such that each layer is significantly different. The retina is the innermost layer of the eye. It acts as a screen that obtains an object’s image exactly inverted to what it appears. The nerves transmit light signals to the brain, resulting in vision. Retinal vein occlusion is a blockage in retinal veins. Veins carry deoxygenated blood away from the source, and a blockage interrupts this blood flow, leading to some serious consequences like haemorrhage or fluid leakage. The patient may experience some sudden changes like dim or blurry vision. It is recommended to take these symptoms seriously and consult a doctor for retinal treatment. Here, we’ll address some noteworthy points regarding retinal vein occlusion, their occurrence, symptoms, causes, and management.

  2. Causes: Retinal occlusion sometimes results from preexisting diseases, or it may also give rise to interrelated conditions. Some of its prominent causes are: • Diabetes • Hypertension • Progressive age • Complex Medical History • Brain Injury • Glaucoma

  3. Symptoms: The symptoms are not very bold, especially if it is caused in one eye. Still, some of the common symptoms traced from various cases are: • Persistent pain in the eyes • Increase in eye pressure • Blurry or cloudy vision • Uneven or missing vision • Floating fine lines or spots in vision. • Types of Retinal Vein Occlusion • There are two types of retinal vein occlusion.

  4. Central Vein Occlusion-It occurs due to swelling in the central part of the retina. As the retina acts as a screen, any distortion in the screen leads to distorted vision. The patient may experience pain, itchiness, and redness as common symptoms. Branch Vein Occlusion– It affects the peripheral part or peripheral vision of the eye. It gradually leads to painless loss of vision in most cases. It usually occurs due to fluctuating blood pressure or high diabetes. Treatment: There is no definite cure for occlusion, but doctors can treat the complications arising due to it. Some treatments by doctors may include: 1)Injections– Steroidial injections are given to provide relief from swelling or pain. It is also used to improve the overall vision. 2) Focal Laser Therapy- This therapy is used to burn or seal blood vessels near the macula to prevent leakage.

  5. Preventions: There are no such prescribed treatments or precautions, but numerous diseases can be prevented by taking precautionary measures. It is necessary to maintain a to-do list to avoid retinal vein occlusion. • Self-care– Take good sleep, restrict your screen time, drink plenty of water, eat healthy food, and exercise for your eyes. • Regular health checkup– You must regularly check blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, and blood sugar as their fluctuation may impact the eyes. • Eye checkup– Get a regular eye checkup. Early diagnosis can prevent vision loss in most cases. Which Age Group Is Most Affected By Retinal Vein Occlusion? Usually, this condition occurs after the 30s or 40s, but sometimes, other complications such as an eye injury may lead to occlusion in the eyes at an early age. Retinal vein occlusion leads to several eye-related complications. It is better to seek help from an ophthalmologist at the right time.
