Article 2:

The brain has one of the most complex structures in the world. It is no surprise that mankind has been

trying to find out how the brain functions since a long time. And we’ve managed to find only a little.

Similar is the case of Schizophrenia, a mental disorder that distresses one's perception of the real world.

In the New York City, Schizophrenia research studies are taking place since quite a long time. Still, the

researchers could come out with few findings on the causes of this mental disorder.

Genetic and Environmental aspects can be the one of the cause. Schizophrenia research studies in the

New York City have proved that a person with a family history of Schizophrenia is more likely to develop

the mental disorder himself. Figures of susceptibility to developing Schizophrenia show that people with

a family history of Schizophrenia are 10%, whereas people without such family history are only 1%. So

you can see that there is a huge difference.

However, the hereditary factor is just an influencing factor and not a determining factor. Adding to this,

60% of people who agonize from Schizophrenia are the ones who had no family history of this disorder.

Looking into the environmental perspectives of the causes responsible for Schizophrenia, scientists have

shown many findings. A higher level of stress triggers Schizophrenia, as increased stress not only induces

various biochemical changes in the body but also upsurges the level of cortisol hormone.

Complications and insufficient care during pregnancy and delivery can also be a detrimental cause.

Children born after complications in the delivery are more probable to suffer from Schizophrenia.

Complications can lead to hypoxia in the neonatal brain, causing the increased possibility of the child

getting Schizophrenia after he grows. This research study was supported by animal models, molecular,

epidemiological and genetic studies. Proper care during pregnancy to circumvent stress and keep a good

diet is a vital factor.

Schizophrenia research studies in the New York City have shown that mothers having malnutrition or

who starve are likely to give birth to a child suffering from Schizophrenia. Also, a study of pregnant

women was undertaken. It revealed that those pregnant women who were aware of their husband's

death during pregnancy underwent multiple stresses. Such women were more vulnerable to give birth

to a child with Schizophrenia than the women who got to know about their husband's death after the

Also, mothers who developed viral infections during pregnancy were more likely to bear a child with

Neurological aspects could also be a cause. Several functional and structural changes in the brain can

cause Schizophrenia. Researchers ages ago proved that individuals with Schizophrenia have larger

ventricles, signifying a discrepancy in their neurons.

There are still various molecular and genetic studies going on in numerous laboratories and research

centers to untangle the causes behind Schizophrenia. As the World of medical science has become more

advanced, we are gaining more grounds to understand this disorder and develop improved treatment
