  4. Me, Myself, I - 2 • Move to ICRF: • Deputy Manager LIS • Strategic remit ensure development and continuity of all library and information services • Relocate NW - UoL: • Contract research post • ERM

  5. Career Path or Road to Nowhere? -1 • Fate or plan • Identified only asset - combination of chemistry & information skills • Career progress - move from core specific skills to transferable general skills • Choose the ‘right’ organisation - consider culture as well as specific post

  6. Career Path or Road to Nowhere? - 2 • Flexibility match competencies/aspirations • Expand job parameters - routine operations • Not a conscious move to E - for the love of a good computer • Opportunities that it affords • Timing - should I stay or should I go?

  7. Evolving Role - 1 • In my remit buzz words: • interoperability • globalization • seamless interface • one stop shop • All perhaps useful in any career strategy • Market place dynamic, multi layered • Holistic approach to info. management

  8. Evolving Role - 2 • Mixed economy of the hybrid Library • As workers/ gatekeepers need to be aware of & respond accordingly • Proactive - move from pull to push • Information has been discovered by other sectors - go forth & promulgate • ‘Carpe informarem’

  9. Vignettes of an ERM -1 • Collection  Resource/Connection management • Disagree - going e - pervasive LIS • Opt/ buy in - have some understanding • E - per se - ramifications. Common skills: • accountability, VfM • measurement techniques/bibliometric studies • maximising investment

Vignettes of an ERM - 2 • Divisive draconian plotting • Aware of opportunities - contract post - different sector approach - identified gaps & brought skills to fill them • Staff structure must support user orientated service delivery changes - flexible • External professional activity • Networking

  11. Tomorrow & Beyond: Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere -1 • Organisation awareness - lateral thinking • How develop service, next ‘killer-app’? • Change is a given - if managed constructively would we want it any other way? • Disintermediation - librarianship but not quite as we know it?

  12. Tomorrow & Beyond: Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere - 2 • The ‘E’ words: commerce, books, courseware, learning • National, regional, institutional agendas • Fit for purpose • Newtonian order  Heisenberg dystopia?
