  2. On a half-sheet of paper…. • Your name. • Where you’re from. • Your favorite movie of all time. • What do you want out of your life? • Do you think Bellarmine should require every student to take a course on ethics? (You won’t get in trouble for answering honestly). • T/P/S

  3. Ethical Case Study • What should Amar do? • Criminal or hero?

  4. Objective vs. Subjective Objective Subjective existing in the mind; belonging to the thinking subject rather than to the object of thought Focused on reality as perceived by the subject • Not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; based on facts; unbiased • Focused on reality of the object

  5. Objective vs. Subjective • Now, let’s come up with some objective and subjective truths about Bellarmine….. • T/P/S • Notre Dame has won 11 national championships, while USC has only won 10. • Notre Dame has the best football program in history. • USC is a team for cheaters and Lane Kiffin is a big, fat idiot.

  6. Cheaters……..

  7. Moral Statements 1: Strongly Agree; 2: Agree; 3: Neither agree nor disagree, or unsure; 4: Disagree; 5: Strongly Disagree

  8. Questions for Discussion • Are some things objectively good? Or is goodness only subjective? • What about objective moral evil? • Is it right for us to judge the moral choices of another person? • Is it right for us to impose our ethics on another person through laws?

  9. NAMBLA • Who has heard of NAMBLA? • NAMBLA's goal is to end the extreme oppression of men and boys in mutually consensual relationships by: • building understanding and support for such relationships; • educating the general public on the benevolent nature of man/boy love; • cooperating with lesbian, gay, feminist, and other liberation movements; • supporting the liberation of persons of all ages from sexual prejudice and oppression.

  10. Let’s return to these questions…. • Is there such a thing as an objective moral good? • An objective moral evil? T/P/S • Is it right for us to judge the ethics of another person? • Is it right for us to impose our ethics on another person? T/P/S

  11. Moral Relativism • What is good depends on a person’s preferences and individual values. • “We are moving toward a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as definitive and has as its highest value one's own ego and one's own desires.” –Pope Benedict XVI

  12. Morality • Pertaining to the rules of right conduct • Nobody strives to do the wrong thing. • We have different ideas about what the right thing is.

  13. Ethics • A system of values based on some higher philosophy which influence our moral choices. • The system of rules or principles on which we base our moral decisions. • If ‘morals’ is the ‘what,’ ‘ethics’ is the ‘why.’

  14. Ethics • Our ethical systems directly influence our moral behavior

  15. Various Ethical Systems

  16. Example • It’s 1962, and James Meredith has applied to be the first black student at the University of Mississippi. • The US Supreme Court has ruled that the University must integrate • Governor Ross Barnett actively opposed integration and would not allow Meredith to enroll • Large, riotous crowds gathered on the campus outside the administration building • President John F. Kennedy has to make a decision about what to do.

  17. What would each of these ethical systems do? • Nationalist Ethics? • Consequentialism? • Deontology? • Relativism? • Virtue Ethics? • Christian Ethics?
