  1. Exploring the use of the iPad for literacy learning By: Lauren Colton

  2. Summary • This article discussed a case study or experiment that used a fourth grade class and how the use of iPads could enhance their literacy skills. Rather than the idea that digital literacy is taking over the classroom and should replace print based literacy, this study used the iPads to complement and enhance print based lessons.

  3. Learning goals for the classroom • Focus on reading comprehension strategy of visualization • Sequencing • Cause and effect • Determining main idea

  4. Popplet • For the first learning experience students used the app Popplet. This app is a graphic organizer that allows user to add boxes to the blank canvas to organize ideas any way they choose. • Students used this app to create a visual diagram to represent the main ideas in a non fiction text. • Students and the teacher liked it because unlike a paper graphic organizer they were not confined to the pre printed spaces and layout.

  5. iBooks • For learning experience two students used the app iBooks for independent reading time. Unlike a print book this app allows the reader to change the text size, tap any word to access a definition, add notes and highlight text all in the same app. • Students liked this app because they could quickly choose and read several selections in a short amount of time. • The only negative was that the teacher has to carefully consider the selection of books on each iPad and each iPad needs to be individualized.

  6. Doodle Buddy • For learning experience three students used the app Doodle Buddy. This app allows the user to use multiple colors, stamps and other tools to create a visual. • Students used the app to create an illustration of a short paragraph or sentence in small groups. They then displayed each of the illustrations to retell the story.

  7. So what if you want to try Ipads in your classroom? • Start by determining your learning goals • Select appropriate activity types and assessments before making the final selection about which tool to use. • Find ways that technology can be helpful for instruction
