  2. Review • R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. • What graphic organizer(s) did you try with students? • What successes or challenges did you experience?

  3. Focus Standard • R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

  4. Focus Standard • KNOW + LEARN = INFERENCE • Inference = Guess, Prediction, Conclusion • Teach students to use “infer” and “inference” to prepare for EOG testing • MUST cite evidence!

  5. Focus Standard The Empty Revolver By Richard Brautigan “It’s hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who’s learning to play the violin.” That’s what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

  6. Graphic Organizers Inference • KLI* • Making Inferences • Making Inferences Chart* • Predict and Infer* • Reading Between the Lines • Text & Subtext*

  7. Assignment • Assign at least one of the graphic organizers to students. • May or may not ask students to write a paragraph as a result of the graphic organizer. • Bring stories of successes or challenges to the next meeting/workshop.

  8. Review • What is the nugget from the first session (R.2)? • What is the nugget from today’s session (R.1)?
