Objectives • Discuss Project Based Learning and Common Core-aligned approaches to teaching government. • Explain how CAPengages students with examination of public policy and active problem solving. • Introduce CAP as a free online resourceto engage students in critical thinking, discussion, and enhanced rigor in reading and writing. • Review and debrief examples of student work for PBL outcomes. www.crfcap.org

  8. What is Civic Action Project? A Free Web-based Practicum for Teaching U.S. Government Five Core Lessons Additional classroom lessons provide additional content and skill-sets. Standards-Based CAP lessons are aligned with state government and common core standards. Student-Directed Students choose a policy- related issue or problem to address and do everything they can to make an impact. Web-Based The CAP website provides instruction and resources to support classroom implementation and student civic actions. www.crfcap.org

  9. CAPPlanners: Roadmap for Civic Actions Project Proposal • Students describe problem or issue. • Policy implications • Share ideas for initial civic actions. Thinking it Through • Encourages deeper analysis of problem or issue. • Provides students with opportunity to shift focus based on results of their initial civic action(s). • Provides teachers with an opportunity to review student progress and provide feedback. Civic Actions 1–5 • Students document and report on their previous civic action(s) and propose their next. • Deeper understanding of policy connections. • Provides teachers with the opportunity to assess connections students are making between CAP process and their government course.   12. Arely CAP Student I learned that some things may not work in your favor, but if you persevere you will get results. I also improved my business letter and e-mail skills. I also learned who I can contact for assistance on certain policy matters. I learned more on how to be an active member of my community.
