In 2002 the Pan South African Language Board did a national sociolinguistic survey and the following findings were made with regard to English: • Use of language in interaction with supervisors: 40% • Language of tuition in the wider educational setting: 80% • Only 22% fully understand political, policy and administrative related speeches and statements made in English. • In terms of other languages, the levels of understanding of English are:
