  2. 7 Total Classes 4 Core Classes (Regular or Pre-AP) 3 Electives (1 of each category) Physical Education Elective or Intervention Academic Support • Language Arts • World Cultures • Math • Science

  3. Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) • When considering Pre-AP courses, please keep in mind your: • High interest level in the subject • Self-motivation to tackle rigorous course work • Study skills • STAAR Scores • Keep in mind that STAAR is still a few months away. Please base your decision now on past experience. • We can change your choice later if your scores make you change your mind either way.

  4. Pre- AP Requirements • Pre-AP Math- You will need your 5th grade teacher to approve you. This is based on your performance with grades and testing. Your teacher will initial your choice sheet. • Pre-AP Language Arts- You will be required to do a summer reading project before school starts. You will read a Lone Star Book and do the project that will be posted on the PCMS Website.

  5. Pre-AP Requirements • Pre-AP World Cultures- There will be a research project toward the end of the school year. • Pre-AP Science – There will be a Science Fair Project required toward the end of the first semester.

  6. Physical education • PE – Sports and Games • Kickstart – Martial Arts

  7. Elective Courses • All PISD students must take one fine arts elective in the 6th or 7th grade. All of these courses count except for Tech Applications. • Art • Band • Choir • Theater • Tech Applications

  8. Intervention • Students will be assigned to an academic intervention class instead of an elective course if the student does not pass the STAAR exam in certain subjects or has poor academic performance. • The purpose is to help the student get caught up in that subject and to go over test-taking strategies.

  9. Academic Support • Succeed and Achieve- Required for all 6th grade students unless in PFLEX or AVID • AVID – Application process required • PFLEX- Required for all PISD identified GT students

  10. Important Dates • Band Tryouts- January 25th – 8:00-2:00 at PCMS • Parent Course Selection Information Night- January 28th – 6:30-7:30 at PCMS • 5th Grade Visit – May 20th- 9:30 at PCMS • 6th Grade Camp- August ?- Date and time will be announced at the 5th Grade Visit
