  5. What to Expect in Middle School - Parents • Many changes in physical, psychological, social, intellectual, moral and ethical development. • Your “puppies” turn into “cats” … • Toddlers and Teens – one and the same??

  6. What Can Parents Do to Help Their Middle Schooler Be Successful? • Attend important events - like “Back to School Night”. • Understand your child’s schedule & classes. • Know each teacher’s expectations. • Check teachers’ websites for HW, messages and grades. • Contact teachers first with questions about expectations, problems, or for extra help. • Check your child’s organizer nightly and check HW for completion.

What Can Your Child Do To Be Successful In Middle School? • Attend school regularly. • Be prepared for class (materials & brain!) • Get plenty of rest and eat healthy foods. • Understand teachers’ expectations. • Be focused and attentive in class. • Ask for help when needed. • Use his/her organizer faithfully. • Do nightly homework. • Turn work in on time. • Study for tests.

  9. GATE Program GATE-identified students must prioritize either: Language Arts Block or Science as their cluster preference. Parent Meeting – March 5th 6:00 p.m.

GATE Program ONLY GATE IDENTIFIED STUDENTS SHOULD FILL OUT THIS PORTION 2009-2010 Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) 6th Grade Cluster Class Selection Form Please prioritize GATE cluster class selections using 1 for your first choice and 2 for your second choice. _____ Language Arts/History Block _____ Science Please note that placement in the laptop program is in lieu of placement in GATE cluster classes.

  11. LAPTOP Program • LAPTOP students will be scheduled into laptop classes for: 1. Language Arts/History Block, and 2. Science. • LAPTOP applications are available online. • Parent Meeting on March 5th 7:00 p.m.

  12. Important Dates & Events • Open House – Thurs., May 21st, 2009 starting at 6:30 p.m. • WEB (Welcome EveryBody) new student orientation & Registration - in August • Scheduling forms are due back March 9th to your child’s 5th grade teacher.
