  3. Grades & Attendance • Students are required to maintain a 90% attendance rate all year. If a student drops below a 90%, the Student Affairs Committee will meet to determine required intervention. Credit may be withheld.

  4. What do YOU Want to do After High School? • Apprenticeships • Military • Community & Technical Colleges • Missouri Public 4-Year Colleges • MU, KU, or other major university

  5. Terminology • 1 credit = year-long class • .5 credit = a semester class (1/2 of the school year) • Credits are required in specific subject areas in order to graduate or to be admitted to colleges/programs • BHS students enroll in 7 credits per year + .25 Bear Time credit

  6. College Entrance Requirements • Language Arts 4 credits • Social Studies 3 credits • Math (Alg 1 or higher) 3 or 4 credits • Science (Biol/Chem/Phys) 2 or 3 credits • Fine Arts 1 credit • Foreign Language – some colleges require 2 credits of the same Foreign Language

Advanced Studies Opportunities • Advanced Placement (AP) –Exposure to college-level material/AP Test for credit or advanced placement in college • College Credit/ Dual Credit – Upon satisfactory completion, the student earns both high school and college credit for the course • Articulated Credit – Successful completion of certain classes will earn college credit after completion of 15 hours at various colleges • Credit by Examination – College credits will be awarded according to the college’s “credit by examination” policy. There is minimal charge for the transcription of these credits.

Graduation Requirements • Language Arts 4.0 credits • Social Studies 3.0 credits • Mathematics 3.0 credits • Science 3.0 credits • Fine Arts 1.0 credit • Practical Arts .5 credit • Physical Education 1.0 credit • Health .5 credit • Personal Finance .5 credit • Electives 7.5 credits • Total Units 24 credits

  9. Language Arts • 4 credits required for graduation • English I • English II • English III or AP Literature • English IV or Crowder College English or Speech • 4 credits required for colleges

  10. Social Studies • 3.0 credits required to graduate 9th – Mod US History 10th – World History 11th – American Government/AP Am Govt (American History and American Government for a 1.0 credit. Students must pass the MO Constitution, US Constitution & Civics tests).

  11. Mathematics • 3 credits required to graduate • 3 or 4 credits (Algebra 1 or higher) required for colleges • 9th - Algebra I • 10th - Geometry • 11th - Algebra II or Integrated Math • 12 - College Algebra or Algebra II • Algebra I in 8th grade counts towards college admission, but not high school graduation requirements

  12. Science • 3 credits required to graduate • Biology is required • 9th - Physical Science or Biology • 10th - Biology or Adv Biology, POE • 11th - Ecology, Fish & Wildlife or Chemistry • 12th - Physics, Adv Chemistry • Most colleges require at least one class to be a lab

  13. Foreign Language • May take up to four levels of Spanish • At least two levels of the same foreign language are required by some colleges • Check with individual colleges for their specific requirements • Counts as part of the 16 core requirement for student athletes

  14. Fine Art • 1 credit required to graduate • Courses may be taken from the following areas: • Art • Music – Vocal or Instrumental

  15. Practical Arts • .5 credit required to graduate • Personal Finance is required (may be taken during summer school) • Courses may be taken from the following areas: • Business • Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) • Engineering & Industrial Technology • Agriculture • Nevada Regional Tech Center (NRTC)

  16. Physical Education • 1 credit required to graduate • PE (Team Sports) • Adv Fitness (Weights)

  17. Health • .5 credit required to graduate • Should be taken in 10th grade • May be taken during summer school

  18. Project Lead the Way (PLTW)Engineering • Engineer & Engineer Tech • An engineer designs and creates new systems and products. An engineer “changes the world and helps all people!” • An engineering technologist uses practical knowledge and applies that knowledge to solve design problems, tests and operates systems. • PLTW Courses – are dual college credit courses and receive 1.5 weighted credit • Introduction to Engineering Design (9th grade) • Principles of Engineering (10th grade) • Civil Engineering & Architecture (11th or 12th grade) • Engineering Design & Development (11th or 12th grade)

  19. Project Lead the Way (PLTW)Computer Science • Design solutions for technology challenges, coding, create products & applications • PLTW Courses – are dual college credit courses and receive 1.5 weighted credit • Computer Science Principles (9th or 10th grade)

  20. Nevada Regional Tech Center Practical Arts credits in areas of: • Auto Technology I/II • Construction Technology I/II • Culinary Arts I/II • Early Childhood Careers I/II • Welding Technology I/II • Graphic Design I/II • Marketing (1 hour) • Health Sciences (12th grade) • This is a 2-year commitment and we pay tuition to NRTC for our students to attend • Great training opportunity for our students who want to go into one of these career fields - many articulated credits!

  21. A+ Program • State-funded program to encourage post-secondary education • Provides tuition assistance for full-time students to any public Missouri community college or technical school • Students must apply for the program and meet certainguidelines

  22. A+ Requirements • Attend an A+ School for three consecutive years prior to graduation • Graduate with an unweighted cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher • Maintain a 95% attendance record in grades 9-12 • Perform 50 hours of unpaid tutoring in our district • Maintain a good citizenship record and avoid the use of alcohol and unlawful drugs • Score Proficient on the Algebra I EOC or combined ACT & GPA

  23. MSHSAA Eligibility Once in high school, students maintain eligibility by: • Passing at least 3.0 credits in the semester prior to participation • Enrolling in at least 3.0 credits during semester of participation

  24. National CollegiateAthletic Association (NCAA) • Before a student is eligible to participate in college athletics at the NCAA DI or DII or the NAIA level, the NCAA/NAIA Clearinghouse must certify the student has taken a college prep curriculum. • DI & DII (16 core) require credits in core subject areas. The BHS diploma requires 13 core credits, so youmust be sure to take 3 additional core courses in high school. You should register in Spring of the Junior year.

Course Selection Process Easy as A, B, C! • Access Program of Study & Career Guide (on-line) • Update Personal Plan of Study with Counselor, Advisor & Parents (MO Connections) • Consult parents • Consult teachers/recommendations • Complete Course Requests Form • List alternate courses on Course Request Form • Parents must sign off on Course Request Form • February 14 at Student-Led Conference
