  1. True Story The life, death and life of Jesus Christ

  2. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 • For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, • 1)Christ died 2) was raised on the third day

  3. According to what Scriptures? • He died • Is. 53:5-6 But he was pierced for our transgressions,    he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him,    and by his wounds we are healed…and the LORD has laid on him    the iniquity of us all. • Ps. 22:11-18Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths against me. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hand and my feet. All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.

  4. According to what Scriptures? • He died • Is. 52:14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him, his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being    and his form marred beyond human likeness • Is. 50:6I offered my back to those who beat me,    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face    from mocking and spitting. • Lk. 18:31-33 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.”

  5. According to what Scriptures? • He was raised up • Ps. 16:9-10 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your Holy One see decay • Acts 13:35-37 Therefore He also says in another Psalm:‘ You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.’ “For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; 37 but He whom God raised up saw no corruption. See also, Acts 2:25-31

  6. He Died • 1.“My soul is troubled.” (Jn. 12:27, Mt. 26:38) • 2. He was in extreme agony (Lk. 22:44) • 3. He was betrayed (Lk. 22:48) • 4. He was mocked, beaten and spit on (Lk. 22:63, Mt. 26:67-68) • 5. Mocked again by Herod (Lk 23:9-11)

  7. He Died • 6. All the while being falsely accused (Lk. 23:2, 21, 23; Mk. 14:55-59) • 7. He was scourged (John 19:1, Mk. 15:15)

  8. The Scourge • The Roman scourge was designed to inflict extreme pain. • It was punishment for slaves and criminals. • The idea was to bring a man as close to death as possible without killing him, although many died during a scourge.

  9. He Died • 8. Crown of thorns, beaten and mocked (Jn. 19:2-4, Mk. 15:16-20) • 9. Carried His cross (Jn. 19:17) • 10. He was crucified (Jn. 19:18) • 11. He is mocked again by Jews and Romans (Lk. 23:35-36) • 12. He was stabbed with a spear (Jn. 19:34)

  10. He was raised up • 1. Empty tomb (Jn. 20:3-10, Lk. 24:1-3) • 2. He appeared to Mary Magdalene (Mk. 16:9, Jn 20:16) • 3. He appeared to 2 disciples (Lk. 24:13-35, Mk. 16:12-13) • 4. He appeared to the eleven (Mk 16:14, Lk. 24:36-43) • 5. He was seen by 500 believers at once!! (1 Cor. 15:6) • 6. He was seen by James and Paul (1 Cor. 15:7-8)

  11. He was raised up • 1 Pet. 2:16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty • 1 Cor. 15:11 Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. • 1 Cor. 15:20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

  12. What does this mean? • John 11:25-27: • 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrectionand the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.Do you believe this?” • 27 “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
