Collective Worship Today!? • “It can no longer be justified to continue this mandatory Collective Worship to a captive audience in schools, given that the majority of pupils – in secondary schools at least – are not religious…. The long and continuing decline in religious belief has reached a point where in many schools any collective worship is embarrassing to pupils and teachers alike.” • We strongly support the continuation of Collective Worship in all schools, recognising the major contribution it makes to the spiritual and moral development of pupils, which is a prime goal of education. It is believed by other faith groups to be of benefit even though its emphasis is mainly Christian.”

What about KS1? • At KS1 a class book replaces the individual diaries. • The teacher/TA scribes the children’s responses • It then forms part of the classroom worship focus. • The material is aimed at KS2/3 so care need to be taken to adapt material • This is a work in progress comments and ideas welcome !

How has it worked ? • Provides opportunities for SMSC • Linked to SEAL and soon RRS • Spiritual Journaling • Staff get admin done! • Accessible to all faiths and none. • Doesn’t meet legal requirement • Depends on the attitude of the tutor • Depends on how it is explained to pupils • Can be literacy dependant

What the inspectors said • ‘They also take the opportunities through reflection time and prayer provided in assembly and in their ‘reflection diaries ‘ to consider a range of issues, including the plight of those suffering elsewhere in the world’ Ofsted • ‘The innovative use of reflection diaries throughout the school are seen by students as an important opportunity for them to have time to think about the messages they hear in worship. The diaries encourage students to add depth to their thinking’ SIAS
