My Pyramid Project Nutritional Analysis • Introduction:After discussing the importance of fitness and nutrition in your Food Preparation class you feel that you may need to make some improvements increase your overall health and well being. You have been leading a very unhealthy lifestyle of eating foods from fast food restaurants, quick marts and snack bars. You have decided to make changes in your eating habits and fitness goals due to weight gain, lack of energy and poor appearance.

My Pyramid Project Nutritional Analysis • The Task: Using on-line sources you will analyze your daily intake of foods items, identify foods that you should be eating more or and less of, determine proper amounts of vitamins and minerals, compute your daily caloric intake for your age, sex and weight. You will write an essay describing what changes you must make to your diet to live a healthy lifestyle. You will also create a calcium brochure stating why teens need calcium in their bodies. You will also become familiar with your school’s Health and Wellness policy where you will analyze polices from other schools outside of your district and create a menu for your school’s lunch program.

  4. My Pyramid Project Nutritional Analysis • The Process: 1. To find My Pyramid website, enter www.pyramid.gov on internet explorer 2. On the right hand side in “My Pyramid Plan” enter age; select your sex and level of physical activity. Click submit. Print results. 3.. Click “For a more detailed assessment…. My Pyramid Tracker” On bottom left of page click “new user registration” Create an account- save changes then select, “proceed to food intake”

Select “Food Intake Entry” • on the left hand side enter food item, then select search. • Choose item that best describes what you ate- click ADD to the left of the food description. • On right side choose quantity, serving size and number of servings • Either SAVE & analyze food choices OR choose to enter more foods 5. Once you “Save and analyze”, select “Meeting 2005 Dietary Guidelines.” Choose one of the following “maintains your current weight” or “lead you to gradually achieving a healthier weight.” 6. Print 2005 Dietary Guidelines along with My Pyramid Recommendation and Nutrient Intakes. You must have each of these 3 papers print for each day’s worth of food you enter (5 days total)

Once you have entered your food intake for one day, analyze your Healthy Eating History for Food Energy, Protein, Carbohydrates, Fat, Calcium and Sodium. 8. Create a three fold brochure using Microsoft Publisher to describing the benefits of calcium, why it is needed in the teens body, ways to incorporate calcium in a teen’s diet and analyze concerns with fortified milk products. 9. Go to http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/physical_activity.html. Analyze your physical activity for 5 days. 10. View the American Red Cross website http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3010854. , Write a letter to the school board stating why physical activity is beneficial to the overall physical and emotional well being of a student and that is must remain in schools.

C.What impact does physical activity play on your overall health? D. Describe your strengths and weakness in your eating patterns. E. Provide examples of how you determined what influences your eating habits. Brainstorm ideas of breaking any negative patterns of eating habits you may have.

Type a two page essay providing examples of the Hollidaysburg School District’s lunch menu is or is not in line with the new food guide pyramid. Answer the following questions within your essay: A. What changes if any does the School District need to make in order to comply 100% with the district’s wellness policy? C. As a student do you feel that the wellness policy has made school lunches better or worse. Support your answer.

Hopefully this project has opened your eyes to a new healthy lifestyle and you will now think twice about what you eat.
