  1. Name Mr. RoaEnglish 10 September 19, 2012 Do Now: Take out your homework, and begin working on the Do Now. Copy, interpret, and explain whether you agree or disagree with the following quote: “No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem.” – Booker T. Washington

  2. Review • Who was Booker T. Washington? What did he believe in? • What was Booker T. Washington’s legacy?

  3. Key Terms • Characterization – The process of creating a character in the text. • Direct Characterization- The author explicitly states what the character is like. • Indirect characterization- The author implicitly describes a character through a character’s speech, actions, thoughts, etc. • The purpose of characterization is to develop a character in a story.

  4. Read Aloud Pages 15 to 18 • Today we will be reading an excerpt from Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison • Scholars will identify and define key vocabulary words from the text. The teacher will elicit definitions for the following words: • Contradiction • Exulted • Meek • Oration • Scholars will discuss the following Pivotal Questions: 1. What is revealed about the character in the first paragraph? How do you know? 2. What does the character mean when he states, I am only ashamed of myself for having at one time been ashamed? 3. How does the grandfather feel about society? 4. What purpose does the grandfather serve in the beginning of the story?

  5. Independent Work • Answer the following questions in complete sentences: • What effect did the grandfather have on the speaker? why was the speaker praised by the white men in town? What can we infer about his behavior? • What is the author referencing when he talks about his "humble" graduation speech? Who gave a similar speech? How did the white people respond to him? • Where was the speaker invited? What did he have to take part in? What is revealed about society?

  6. Homework Read and annotate pages 18 to 23 - Circle important or difficult words. Define the words on the margins - Underline examples of characterization and explain what is revealed about the characters on the margins.

What race did the boys belong to? • How did the boys feel about the battle royal before it began?

  9. Review • What is characterization? • What are the two types of characterization? • Which one is used more frequently by authors? Why?

  10. Read Aloud Pages 24to 27 • Scholars will identify and define key vocabulary words from the text. The teacher will elicit definitions for the following words: • Bombarded • Languid • Jangled • Scholars will discuss the following Pivotal Questions: • What is the only thing that the speaker cares about? What does this reveal about what is important to him? • Why are the boys allowing this to happen to them? What emotion do they feel? • What does the author mean by the floor hurried to meet him? What image is created by his words? • How are the boys treated by the spectators? What can we infer about the relationship between blacks and whites? • What happened to the boys when they reached for the money? How did they respond?
