The Vision • A seamless, continuously maintained, nationally consistent set of base geographic data • Maintained through partnerships • A national foundation for science, land and resource management, recreation, policy making, and homeland security • Available over the Web and the source for revised topographic maps

Partners’ Roles • Federal: identify needs and collaborate on data • State, Regional, and Local: coordinate consortia, identify changes and provide updates, and collaborate on data • Private Industry: provide tools, open standards, and data; conduct research • Academia: provide training and conduct research • Libraries: ensure public access to The National Map • Volunteers: identify changes and provide updates • USGS: catalyst, collaborator, integrator, producer when needed, archive, guarantor

  13. Refocusing Geography Staff • Historically, Geography staff have worked in regional production centers • The National Map vision calls for distributed staffing to make partnership opportunities more visible and sustainable

  14. Implementing The National Map • USGS region staff conduct partnership, contract, and in-house projects to provide data, tools, and capabilities

  15. Refocusing Geography Staff • Increasing numbers of Geography staff will be co-located with partners. These staff focus on partnership building, data access and integration, and project coordination. Existing and planned (2003) locations are shown as
