  1. The National Map – An Update By: Rick Pearsall USGS/Mapping U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey

  2. USGS The National Map • The Institutionalization and Implementation of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure and Geospatial One-Stop • Framework Data (OMB Circular A-16) • Standards (ISO, ANSI, FGDC, GOS) • Metadata • Clearinghouse • Partnerships

  3. The Vision • A seamless, continuously maintained, nationally consistent set of base geographic data • Maintained through partnerships • A national foundation for science, land and resource management, recreation, policy making, and homeland security • Available over the Web and the source for revised topographic maps

  4. OMB A-16 and Framework Datasets * Elevation (NED) * Orthoimagery * Hydrography (NHD) • Geographic Names (GNIS) • Earth (Land) Cover (NLCD) • NSDI and GOS Framework Themes

  5. Standards Geospatial One Stop - Elevation, Orthoimagery, Hydrography (NHD) FGDC - Elevation, Orthoimagery, Geonames, Earth Cover, SDTS, Accuracy Standards ANSI - SDTS, member of INCITS L1 ISO • Participation on numerous ISO Technical Committees and Working Groups • OGC • - Participation on numerous OGC Committees and Activities

  6. Metadata/Clearinghouse • Over 6 million metadata records being served via 19 NSDI Registered Clearinghouse nodes • Existing and Planned Data • Metadata tool development

  7. Building Partnerships - Scope 1. Data and database development 2. Data and database maintenance 3.      Data dissemination and distribution 4.      Exchange of geospatial and remotely sensed information, data and products 5.      Feature serving and generalization 6.      Outreach and education 7.      Research and applications 8.      Sharing technical information and expertise 9.      Standards development 10. Web mapping services and applications 11. Workshops, training, and technology transfer

  8. Partners’ Roles • Federal: identify needs and collaborate on data • State, Regional, and Local: coordinate consortia, identify changes and provide updates, and collaborate on data • Private Industry: provide tools, open standards, and data; conduct research • Academia: provide training and conduct research • Libraries: ensure public access to The National Map • Volunteers: identify changes and provide updates • USGS: catalyst, collaborator, integrator, producer when needed, archive, guarantor

  9. Partnerships Elevation – National Digital Elevation Program Orthoimagery – National Digital Orthophoto Program Hydrography – National Hydrography Dataset Federal (FS, NPS, NOAA, BLM) State (DE, FL, HI, OR, NM) Local (Mecklenburg, Charleston, WashDC) Geographic Names - GNIS

  10. Data Access Portal • Distributed Data Servers • OGC Compliant Web Map and Data Services • Catalog Driven • Organizes Partner Information • Quantifies Partner Data Services • Provide Multi-Service Integration • Enterprise Integration • Future – Style Layer Descriptors, Enterprise Integration, OGC Work, Partnership training

  11. (test site) Public Land Survey from the BLM’s Geographic Coordinate Data Base

  12. Business and Workforce • Development of OMB PART and Exhibit 300 documents • Development of Enterprise Architecture built on Zachman Framework • Staff/Workforce Retraining

  13. Refocusing Geography Staff • Historically, Geography staff have worked in regional production centers • The National Map vision calls for distributed staffing to make partnership opportunities more visible and sustainable

  14. Implementing The National Map • USGS region staff conduct partnership, contract, and in-house projects to provide data, tools, and capabilities

  15. Refocusing Geography Staff • Increasing numbers of Geography staff will be co-located with partners. These staff focus on partnership building, data access and integration, and project coordination. Existing and planned (2003) locations are shown as
