  4. Why educate? • Education remains the single, most comprehensive solution for global progress and prosperity. • Education and Economics are the primary levers of change to create a democratic society. Transforming lives………Inventing the future.

Is the glass half full or half empty? • India – an established ground for quality education today • Vocational and professional streams of education ensure employability • Increasing cost of education deters students from lower socio-economic backgrounds • Continuing funding crisis, limits academic progress for this population • Numbers will drop as many better off working or living off low skilled jobs • Empowerment of the girl child – not a concern for the masses Transforming lives………Inventing the future.

An Educated child in 2020 Today and Tomorrow’s children need • Cognitive skills to work with new and evolving technologies; • Thinking and reasoning skills to make sound decisions and demonstrate values inherent in a democracy; • Interpretive skills to sift through, analyze, and synthesize information; • Problem solving skills that involve multiple perspectives; and • Interpersonal skills and flexibilities to live peacefully and productively in a global society. The Sugun Thomas Foundation • Registered Trust established on 5th December 2005 • Established in the memory of Sugun Thomas • Non-profit, non-political and secular in character • Activities purely charitable in nature • Corpus aimed at instituting and maintaining sponsorships, scholarships, assistantships or fellowships and to render aid to students to pursue their education • Driven by an acute sense of equal opportunity, social responsibility and integrity Transforming lives………Inventing the future.

Our Mission The Sugun Thomas Foundation aims to empower disadvantaged children by leveraging their talent and potential through high quality education, which will give them invaluable growth and development opportunities.  In doing so, our commitment is to stimulate interest and engage individuals and institutions in this precious cause of transforming children’s lives & inventing the future Transforming lives………Inventing the future.

Action Areas • Education • To start with, the Foundation aims to sponsor 2 children in school from the academic year 2006-07 and commit to continue the sponsorship for the chosen children through the rest of their school and college educations, subject to continued performance. With 2 children being sponsored every year, it is planned that by 2012, 14 children will be sponsored by the Foundation. • Health and Hygiene • A well-rounded and balanced child has both intellectual and emotional competence. The Foundation will aim to provide for and enhance physical well being, welfare and related interests of the child. Transforming lives………Inventing the future.

Action Areas • Supplementary Education • As a child progresses steadily towards a fulfilling career, vocational coaching and skill development becomes crucial in ensuring an easy transition to the demands of a professional life and global society. Our effort will be directed towards building communication, technical and other crucial competencies. • Talent Building • Every child is endowed with special talent and aptitude; these are not always visible on the surface of a growing personality. Our aim is to give wings to latent potential in each child by encouraging and participating in events that showcase these gifts in each child. Transforming lives………Inventing the future.

Team Profile SUSAN • Wife of the late Sugun Thomas, mother of Shreya and Siddarth Thomas. • Presently working with the Management Development Center of the Murugappa Group. • Graduated in Psychology from Women’s Christian College and specialized in Social Work from Madras School of Social Work, Chennai. • Fulbright Scholar in Leadership and Management from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. • Board Member of the Madras Medical Mission and Committee member of WCC Alumni Association. CHERIAN • Childhood friend and classmate of Sugun Thomas in school. • Entrepreneur with multiple business interests. • Currently running an advertising company, Advision, at Chennai. • Alumnus of Don Bosco School. • Graduated in Commerce from Loyola College and completed Masters in Business Administration from University of Madras.
