  2. Using Words • Nephron • Pneumonia • Epiglottis • Ureter • Alveoli • Diaphragm • Bronchi • Urethra • Carbon Monoxide

  3. Finding Main Ideas 10.p.264; Carbon dioxide is formed in all body cells as a waste gas during cellular respiration. Carbon dioxide into the blood and is given off in the air as you breathe out. 11.p.277; Urea, sugar, water, salts diffuses out of nephron capillaries. 12.p.269; Oxygen diffuses into cells; and carbon dioxide diffuse out of cells. 13.p.270; The domelike diaphragm moves upward and squeezes trapped air in the chest wall. The pressure of the air increases , the lungs a squeezed and the space gets smaller. 14.p.279; Water loss through the skin is one way the body cools itself. 15.p273; A person with emphysema does not have enough alveoil to get oxygen into the blood. 16.p.269; oxygen diffuses into the alveoli from the bronchi and then into the blood capillaries into alveoli. Carbon dioxide diffuses out of capillaries into alveoli and then out of alveoli into the bronchi.

  4. Using Main Ideas • 17. The diaphram moves down as it contracts, allowing the chest wall to enlarge. Air pressure in the chest wall decreases, and air rushes in to inflate the lungs. • 18 . Earthworms exchange gases by diffusion across the skin. Fish carry on gas exchange across organs called gills. • 19. Air enters the nose and passes into the trachea. From the trachea, the air moves into two bronchi that lead to the right and left lung. • 20. Urea is the waste that results from the breakdown of body protein, while urine is the liquid waste, containing urea, that passes out of the body. The ureters carry liquid waste, containing urea that liquid wate from the kidneys to the urinary bladder, while the urethra carries outside the body. CO is given off as a waste product of cellular respiration. Carbon Monoxide is given off in the burning fossil fuels. • 21. Emphysema can be prevented by not smoking and by avoiding air pollution.
