Brief Introduction Shane Edwards is a Group 1 winning racehorse trainer with over 300 winners to his name. Born in Perth but now resides and trains in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Shane has global experience of the industry spanning three decades. Shane has been involved in horse racing all of his life, as the son of former trainer and apprentice jockey, David Edwards and brother to apprentice jockey Beaux, racing certainly runs in the family.
Shane’s Story Shane was born in Perth and educated at Guildford Grammer School before going on to Marcus Oldham College in Melbourne, Victoria, to obtain a diploma in horse business management. He witnessed training success from a young age as his father trained two Australian Derby winners, Beaux Art, 1994 and Mr Sandgroper, 2004. Shane’s father was also the stable hand of Bart Cummings first Melbourne Cup winner Light Fingers.
Shane’s Story Shane first ventured abroad in 1999 to work for Brian Meehan in the UK, from which he gained invaluable knowledge from the two time Breeder’s Cup winner and Dubai Duty-Free winner at the World Cup Carnival. Post this short stint Shane returned home to become assistant trainer for his father until taking out his own licence in 2001. Shane’s career started well as he produced a high-class 2yo colt, Classic Cut, who was unbeaten after 3 starts, winning the Queen’s Plate, Supremacy Stakes and Perth Stakes before finishing a luckless 3rd in the Karrakatta plate. Further success came in 2005 with the unbeaten Champion 2yo Filly, No Questions, winner of the Group 1 Karrakatta Plate and named WA 2yo of the year, owned by former Chairman of the WA Turf Club John Roberts.
Shane’s Story The early 2000’s proved a profitable period with some of Shane’s greatest training achievements to date. In 2007 Shane won the Western Australian Oaks with the aptly named Westerly Breeze for Ritchie Green, three seasons later he won the same race with Cassandara’s Shadow owned by Shane himself and Mr Tang Weng Fei.
Shane’s Story Black Type success continued with Rock My Pago winning the 2008 Belmont Oaks, owned by Shane himself with a syndicate of friends. The 2011 Champion Fillies Stakes followed with the impressive Eight Till Late owned by prominent Singaporean owner Mr Tang Weng Fei of the Hydrocarbon Stable. Later in the year came perhaps, Shane’s greatest training feat in Australia thus far, when outsider Guest Wing owned by former vice chairman of the WA Turf Club Lex Piper his wife Shirley and Mr Ritchie Green held off the field to claim the Perth Cup. Impressively throughout Shane’s time training in Western Australia he maintained a top ten position within the WA Trainers Premiership.
Shane’s Story The end of 2012 saw a change in scene and continent for Shane and his family as he took up a contract in Asia to train for the Malayan Racing Association, the controlling body of racing in Singapore and Malaysia. Shane immediately made an impact with his first starter in Asia, when Rebel Fury stormed to Group 1 Tunku Gold Cup (1200m) success, steered home by champion English jockey, Alan Munro. Rebel Fury repeated the feat in 2014 providing Shane with his first dual Group 1 winner.
Shane’s Story 2013 proved a year to remember for Shane and his team as Dansili colt, Monsili won the Group 1 Penang Gold Cup after an unbeaten prep of five successive wins. Further Group success in 2013 came from Ave The Snip, owned by Mr Mah Ting Chong winning the Group 2 Charity Cup with Mr Ray Lee’s Crazy Club finishing 2nd providing Shane with the stable quinella.
Shane’s Story Shane’s success has been consistent and he has been able to maintain a top ten position within the MRA training ranks since his arrival in Asia. 2019 saw the highest rated horse in the Malayan Racing Association, Truson (rated 123) taking up residence in Shane’s training facilities and providing him with his fourth Group 1 win and first Selangor Gold Cup with a weight carrying record of 60KG’s. This feat means Shane now only has the Group 1 Piala Emas Sultan Selangor to complete a career Selangor Turf Club Triple Crown.
