Beginning Goals • Plan and host a conference for teachers in our district • Develop a 9th grade earth science unit that incorporates the LIGO e-Lab • Authentic—potentially helpful to research efforts at LIGO • Limit myself to tools available to students in my classroom Educational Output Research Output

  3. Standards-Based Grading • No averaging of points • Students are evaluated using a 4-point rubric for each learning target where 3 is meeting standard • Non-achievment factors (participation, attendance, behavior) measured separately

  4. NAGT Presentation • Presented on I2U2 and the LIGO e-Lab • Established a network with upper-tier geoscience educators

  5. Research output • What is the correlation between dam water output and LIGO seismic data? • How does Priest Rapids compare with McNary? • What is the future potential for high levels of seismic disturbances due to spillway output from the dams?

  6. Was 2006 an anomaly? Why the gradual decline? What happened in the 90’s? How will public policy affect the flow?

Findings • From the data, it appears that the correlation between water flow over McNary spillway and LIGO seismic data is linear above 100 KCFS • At 200 KCFS the seismic disturbance due to McNary Dam is nearly twice the background seismic (at night) and well over the median daytime value • About 2% of days in the last 20 years have averaged over 200 KCFS and 5% have averaged over 150 KCFS
