  2. Geography • The northern plain was fertilized and well watered by the Indus and the Ganges • The Deccan Plateau, dry, and sparsely populated • The coastal plains, flat land along the east and west coasts where farming, fishing and trading can occur

  3. Mauryan Empire • Chandragupta Maurya first gained power in the Ganges Valley. • With his army, he soon conquered much of northern India and the Deccan Plateau. • The Maurya dynasty ruled over the first united Indian empire from 321 B.C. to 185 B.C..

  4. Government • Officials collected taxes and oversaw the the building of roads, harbors which helped trade to flourish. • The Maurya dynasty set up an efficient bureaucracy and a strong government • Other officials managed government-owned factories and shipyards.

  5. Asoka and Reform - Chandragupta’s grandson ruled differently. Horrified of brutality Asoka denied further conquest and became buddhist. - Wanted to rule by moral example rather than violence. He sent buddhist missionaries across India but was tolerant in other beliefs. - Asoka’s empire united his diverse people and brought peace and prosperity however after his death the empire declined.

  6. Contributions/ Achievements - United much of India for the first time. There was peace prosperity and trade flourished. - Had schools and a library learning was very advanced. - Spread Buddhist religion by the means of missionary activity.
