  2. Y.E.S. MISSION STATEMENT “We assist in the advancement of the educational, cultural and social development of American Indian students in the Oneida Community and surrounding school districts.”

  3. Y.E.S. GOALS • RAISE THE GRADE POINT AVERAGES OF STUDENTS • RAISE THE NUMBER OF GRADUATES • LOWER DROP OUT RATES Identified by GSD leadership team

  4. BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIALIST STAFF • The Y.E.S. Specialists are required to have a Bachelor Degree or higher in Education or closely related field • Specialists must have a teaching license in order to work with youth. • A Specialist Aide has a high school diploma and works with grades K-5 at Rockledge in Seymour. The Seymour District pays for half of the Aides salary. • Specialists target population are youth in grades 5-12

What do Specialists Do? • Utilize any and all assessments to target academic needs • Conduct individual assessments on youth by reviewing report cards, MAP and WKCE scores • Proctor tests-supervises youth in a quiet area while they take exams • Re-teach lessons taught in a regular classroom utilizing culturally relevant material • Meet with teachers to share information about learning styles and teaching techniques • Assist youth in asking teachers for help

HOMEWORK IS A BIG THING SPECIALISTS: • Provide home work help: • Determine which work needs to be completed • Supervise homework sessions with youth • Direct assistance depends on what the Specialists know • Checking to see that homework is complete • Signs off on completed work (if the teacher will accept non- parent/guardian signature)

DEFINITION OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT • BUILDING ACADEMIC, CULTURAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS • CONTINUOUS SERVICE THROUGHOUT SCHOOL YEARS, NO END DATE • HOMEWORK HELP • PROVIDE SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS WITH RESOURCES • WORK IN SMALL GROUPS • WORK WITH INDIVIDUALS • ACCESS TO STUDENT DATABASES TO TRACK HOMEWORK, ATTENDANCE, ETC.

  9. DEFINITION OF TUTORING • TEACH A SKILL IN ONE AREA AND RELEASE YOUTH FROM SERVICES • DOES NOT INVOLVE HOMEWORK HELP • ONCE CHILD ACHIEVES A SKILL THEIR GRADE MAY NOT RISE BECAUSE HOMEWORK IS STILL NOT BEING DONE • SYLVAN LEARNING and OTHERS USE THIS METHOD

  10. Y.E.S. SPECIALISTS PROVIDEACADEMIC SUPPORT THEY: • Conduct individualized assessments by reviewing report cards, MAP and WKCE scores. • Provide individual Skill Development including organizational methods, social etiquette, critical problem solving skills, note taking techniques, etc… • Proctors necessary assessments including WKCE assessments.

MORE ACADEMIC SUPPORT • Re-teach lessons using a variety of Methods, including those used in the classroom that reinforce the classroom teacher’s content. • Assist youth in asking teachers for help. • Provide home work help • Home work help includes determining which work needs to be completed, supervising youth while they are doing their homework, provides some assistance (depending on the skill set of the provider), checking to see that homework is complete, and signs off on the completed work (if the teacher will accept a non-parent/guardian signature).

  12. OUR POPULATION and SERVICE CRITERIA • THE Y.E.S. PROGRAM RECIEVES SOME JOHNSON O’MALLEY (JOM) FUNDING. • Y.E.S. FOLLOWS JOM GUIDELINES FOR SERVICES • JOM CRITERIA: ¼ DEGREE INDIAN BLOOD OR ENROLLED IN A FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED TRIBE (MUST BE VERIFIED) • Y.E.S. HAS AN APPLICATION PROCESS FOR SERVICES, INCLUDING PARENTAL PERMISSION
