  6. Operation in 2009 • Operation • 1.1.2009: Technical responsibility for SVCs transferred from EN-EL to TE-EPC • Convention for joint operation in 2009 between EN-EL and TE-EPC • Two new EPC teams of Equipment Responsibles for SVCs • SPS: D. Denuziere, X. Genillon • LHC+Booster: J.-M. Bernal, L. Germain-Bonne • Training of the new Equipment Responsibles in progress • In case of Alarms/Trips: CCC calls piquet EL and piquet EPC (injectors) • Annual maintenance • Jan.-March 2009: annual maintenance done by TE-EPC • Documentation • - revision of documentation for all SVC’s in progress (EDMS) • integration into EPC electronic logbook in progress

  7. Operation: Major Events in 2008 • BEQ1: EDMS 945725, 945728, 945729 • - Protection trips of bypass capacitors of saturated reactor (solved). • BEQ3: EDMS 945704, 963394, 964141 • Capacitor failures and starpoint balancing in harmonic filter F7 (solved). • Persistent teething problems of new ABB control system (solved).

  8. ATOP days 2009 5 March 2009 • Introduction • Operation • SVC Meyrin for Booster • SVCs for SPS • Spares • Conclusions

  9. SVC Meyrin for Booster 66 kV (Prevessin) 18 kV PA1 18 kV Meyrin network Station ME9, b. 212 TCR Booster Filters Meyrin Meyrin network Booster

  10. Thyristor Controlled Reactors (TCR) for Booster • TCR • (1997) Observations: - Cracks found in TCR coils Actions: - Repaint TCR coils (Q2/2009) - Purchase spare (IT in Q2/2009) - Spare coils available end of 2009 - Technical State: OK - MTTR: typically several hours (except defective coils)

  11. TCR coils of Booster SVC major crack

  12. Meyrin Filters for Booster (build. 202) • 1st floor: capacitors • 2nd floor: reactors • 3rd floor: resistors - Technical State: OK - MTTR: typically several hours

  13. ATOP days 2009 5 March 2009 • Introduction • Operation • SVC Meyrin for Booster • SVCs for SPS • Spares • Conclusions

  14. Configurations of BE substation (simplified) 400 kV EHT3 (spare) EHT2 EHT1 18 kV 50% of SPS 50% of SPS BEQ1 (1974) +BB3 (1982) (spare) BEQ3 BEQ2 (2001) (2008)

  15. Failure of BEQ3 (BE substation config.) 400 kV EHT3 (spare) EHT2 EHT1 18 kV SPS SPS BEQ1 (1974) +BB3 (1982) (spare) BEQ3 BEQ2 (2001) (2008)

  16. Failure of BEQ2 (BE substation config.) 400 kV EHT3 (spare) EHT2 EHT1 18 kV SPS SPS BEQ1 (1974) +BB3 (1982) (spare) BEQ3 BEQ2 (2001) (2008)

  17. BEQ2 (2002) BEQ3 (2008) - Technical State: very good - All known problems were solved during maintenance - MTTR: typically several hours

  18. BEQ3 (2008)

  19. BEQ1 (1974)

  20. BEQ1 saturated reactor (1974): How much life time remains? (BEQ1 = spare SVC) Supplier GEC ALSTHOM 1992: “The internal inspection revealed that the insulation on all the windings … had severely aged and exhibited signs of brittleness. The cores and windings … were very dark brown to black in colour and shrinkage of the insulation within the winding was apparent … … consequential loss in clamping pressure … It is firmly believed that the major portion of the life of the insulation has been used” (EDMS 813568)

  21. BEQ1 (spare SVC): Major components have reached the end of their life time BEQ3 (2008)

  22. BB3 MICENE control system is working, but we would not be able to repair it. (BB3 = spare SVC) Thyristor valve TCR controls MICENE control system (obsolete)

  23. The future role of the BB3 compensator without BB3 capacitor bank • BEQ1 and BB3 always operate together • BB3 needed as long as we keep BEQ1 (as spare) • New BEQ3 replaces BEQ1 + BB3 • Harmonic performance of BEQ3 is better • than BEQ1 + BB3 with new BEQ3 with BB3 capacitor bank Ref. EDMS: 930998

  24. BEF4 for SPS stable network • technical state: OK

  25. ATOP days 2009 5 March 2009 • Introduction • Operation • SVC Meyrin for Booster • SVCs for SPS • Spares • Conclusions

  26. Spares • - Spare parts inventory for all SVCs currently in progress (Q1+Q2/2009) • Acquisition of additional spares in Q2/2009 • Spare coils • - About 250 coils installed at CERN (40 different types) • MTBF: only 1 coil failure within 25 years (TCR PA4) • Delivery time for a replacement coil about 3…6 months • Call for tender for spare coils in preparation • Spare coils will be available at CERN end of 2009

  27. ATOP days 2009 5 March 2009 • Introduction • Operation • SVC Meyrin for Booster • SVCs for SPS • Spares • Conclusions

  28. Conclusions • all SVC’s: thorough preventive maintenance • SVC for Booster, BEQ2 and BEQ3 for SPS are in a good state • spare SVCs BEQ1+BB3 are operational, but approaching end of life time • (decision required if we invest in spare parts for BEQ2 and BEQ3 • or into a consolidation program for BEQ1+BB3)
