  1. The Silver Award Troop 1416

  2. OUR GOAL : TO MAKE THE LIBRARY MORE TEEN FRIENDLY

  3. Reasons the library is not fun for teens: • Most libraries today seem boring for the following reasons: • Too quiet • Unfriendly staff • Environment doesn’t allow teens to be teens • Not enough books for teens

  4. What we would like to do: • Advertise new things like new books and parties • Add music in the background • Offer teen games on computers • Provide better filters so we can safely surf the Internet for homework • Add color to the walls • Make the environment more modern • Go to the library with friends

  5. The Game Plan: • Send a letter to the CV Public Library Board to propose that our troop form the teen advisory group they are seeking. Ms. Alice suggests that we work through Mr. Banta to get this letter to them. • We meet with members of the Board to agree on the purpose and goals of our group given that there are constraints on our time and their budget. • Visit the library to establish a baseline -- maybe take ‘before’ pictures. • Visit other public libraries in the area. • Find out what the library’s budget is for teen interests. Find out if there are other ways to funnel money toward teen activities sponsored by the library. • Survey fellow teens in the GCISD to hear what they are looking for in a teen space inside a library. Maybe set up a website to capture their opinions. • Set up a way for our troop to communicate project results and accomplishments. • Find out how much it would cost to offer the most popular teen services. • Figure out a cool name for the new space we propose. • Propose the new space to the Board.

  6. Game Plan : Action Item # 1 Send a letter to the CV Public Library Board to propose that our troop form the teen advisory group they are seeking. COMPLETED

  7. Game Plan: Action Item # 2 • We need to set up a meeting with the library board to agree on the purpose and goals of our group given that there are constraints on our time and their budget. • We also need to discuss why they have not followed through with some of their ideas and actions. • Ways we can carry out Action # 2 are: • Talk to the library about having a "Teen Read" (a Sat. morning program that would have free donuts and coffee for teens who come there to read between 8am and 11am) and to also help/participate at the Race to Read fundraiser. • Discuss raising awareness at our schools about the library, (hand out flyers) and also ask the library to have special guests visit library,(teen authors0, sell cool t-shirts and put nice chairs and possibly swings outside library so that people could read outside

  8. At today’s meeting we will: • make survey and send out to facebook and myspace friends. • make a Wikispace that could be used as a blog o communicate. • ask library if we could make a tab on public website explaining what our goals as a Teen Advisory Council to all those visiting website ( advertise what we are doing and how people could communicate with us). • make a rough draft of a flyer to give to businesses around the library to help get support.  • brainstorm ideas to help the library raise money (raffle) and what the teen hangout should be called • tell library that we think that their Spatial Reorganization Plan- Scenario 2 -'out of the box" is the best plan to help the library attract teens.
