  2. Beginnings • 300 BC – Chinese and Koreans to Japan • Warring Clans • 400 AD • Yamato family • Emperor • Yamato emperors still rule today

  3. Heian Period • 794-1185 • Japanese emperor moved his court from Nara to Heiam (modern Kyoto) • Art and writing flourished

  4. Feudalism • 1100: Emperor loses power • Clans established armies • Land given to warlords in turn for protection • Warlords (lords) surrounded themselves with warriors called samurai

  5. Shoguns • 1192 Minamoto clan emerges • = shogun • “Supreme general of the lord’s army” • Emperor still remained, but the shogun held the power

  6. 1192-1600 • Turmoil and warfare • 1600- Tokugawa clan restored order to the chaos, became shogun, and moved his capital to Edo • Edo would come to be known as Tokyo • 1600-1868 – Japan restored period of stability • Persecuted Christians (Catholics) • 1639 – closed port
