  2. Objectives At the end of this lesson the student will: • state when a goal kick should be awarded • state what constitutes a properly taken goal kick • state when the goal kick is in play

  3. DEFINITION A goal kick is awarded when the whole ball has: • Crossed the goal line in the air or on the ground • Was last touched by an attacker • A goal was not scored Note: Anything not standard equipment on the goalposts is considered out of play

  4. WHERE A goal kick is taken from anywhere in the goal area.

  5. RESTART • Ball is placed in the goal area • Any defensive player may take kick • Whole ball must leave the penalty area, into the field, on the first touch • If ball touched prior to leaving the penalty area • Retake the goal kick

  6. SPECIAL SITUATIONS • If anything happens before the whole ball exits the penalty area, the goal kick is retaken WHY? • The ball is not in play yet. Note: An attacking player is not offside at the taking of a goal kick

  7. POSITIONING ON A GOAL KICK All attackers must be and remain outside of penalty area until ball has cleared the penalty area.

  9. GOAL KICK ENTERING GOAL A goal kick kicked directly into: • Opponent’s goal? • award GOAL, restart with kick-off • Own goal? • retake goal kick • ball didn’t leave the penalty area into the field of play • so it was never in play

  10. REVIEW • When is a goal kick awarded? • After whole ball crosses goal line last touched by an attacking player • Who can take the goal kick? • Any defending player may take the kick • From where is the goal kick taken? • from anywhere inside the goal area

REVIEW (cont) • When is the ball in play? • When the whole ball has cleared the penalty area on the first touch • Retake if the ball fails to leave penalty area • Where are opponents required to be? • Outside penalty area until the ball completely leaves the area • Can a goal be scored directly on opponents? • Yes

  12. REVIEW (cont) • Can a player be declared offside if s/he receives the ball directly from the goal kick? • No, if they receive the ball directly from the goal kick • Can the kicker play the ball again? • Not until it touches another player. • IFK to opponents from spot of second touch
