  5. Nebraska Population Changes • Mid 1990s: US Census bureau projected that Nebraska’s minority populations would reach a high of 15% of the total population by 2025. • 2005:20 years ahead of the projection, the racial ethnic minority population of Nebraska was estimated to be 14.6%.

  8. What is the P3 training? Opportunities and Overalls (Chapter 1) • An introductory discussion of the components and skills related to Cultural Intelligence. Definitions Ethnocentrism: the deeply felt belief that your own cultural ways are universal, natural, normal, and even superior to other cultural ways (American Anthropological Association, 2007) Polycentrism: recognition that different kinds of people should be measured by different standards (Hofstede, 2001) Cultural relativism: one culture has no absolute criteria for judging the activities of another culture as “low” or “noble” (Hofstede, 2001)

  15. Cultural Difference in CQ It is sometimes assumed that people from other countries are more culturally intelligent – that minorities inherently possess cultural intelligence skills Is this true? Why or why not?

More Definitions Diversity: A property of a group, not of an individual, and includes differences in race, ethnicity, language, nationality, religion, etc. among various groups within a community. A community is said to be culturally diverse if its residents include members of different groups.

  27. Stereotype:a belief and a decision, a generalized idea or image, usually negative, that is learned about a group of people; when it becomes fixed in our minds, blocking us from seeing members of that group as unique individuals

  28. Men are afraid of commitment. All parents try to make life difficult for their children. Generalizations:discussion points used to describe behavior and flexible to allow altering when new evidence is presented or observed Learning to drive isn’t difficult. Women all want to have large families.
