Education and Career • Received his BS at Ohio University • Received his PhD at the University of Hawaii • Served as a visiting professor at Stanford • Held faculty positions at UC Irvine, USC, and George Mason University • Is a member of the Phycological Society of America, the International Society for Reef Studies, and the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography • He is currently the Chairman and Curator of the department of botany at the Smithsonian Institution

  3. Current Research • Top-down vs bottom-up interactions in coral reef systems • The relative dominance theory • Seaweed experimental taxonomy • The causes of variability in biodiversity, ecology, productivity, and evolution of marine systems

  4. Awards • The Prescott Prize 2003 from Phycological Society • The American Academy for Underwater Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award 2003 • (Both were awarded jointly to Mark and his wife Diane)

  5. Fun Facts • Mark and his wife Diane work jointly on nearly everything • They have published over 150 papers in scholarly journals and have published several books • They hold a Guinness record for discovering the deepest plant on earth (268 meters!)
