University of California & Cal.State University A – G Requirements A. History/Social Science – 2 Years Required B. English – 4 Years Required C. Mathematics – 3 Years Required, 4 Years Recommended (Math beyond Algebra 1) No Grade Lower Than “C” D. Laboratory Science – 2 Years Required, 3 Years Recommended E. Language other than English – 2 Years Required, 3 Years Recommended F. Fine Arts – 1 Year Required (College Prep) G. Electives – 1 Year Required (Visual/Performing Arts, History, English, Adv.Math, Lab Sci., Lang. other than English)

University of California • 10 Campuses Statewide • UCLA, UCI, UCB, UCSB, UCSD, etc. • Four year colleges – Various Majors & Programs, BA/BS, MA/MS, Doctoral & Professional (Medical & Law school) • A-G Requirements – No Grade Low Than a “C”- Minimum GPA = 3.00 • SAT Reasoning or ACT w/writing required & SAT II Subject tests recommended for competitive majors • App Filing Period Nov. 1 – 30 (App avail. Oct 1st) Fee=$70
Independent/Private • 77 Campuses Statewide • USC, Pepperdine, La Verne, Claremont, etc. • 2 & 4 year colleges – Various Majors & Programs, Technical, Art, Culinary Schools, BA/BS, MA/MS, Doctoral & Professional (Medical & Law school) • Wide Variety of Entrance Requirements • Entrance Exam (SAT/ACT) Varies – Check Each Individual School for Requirements
SAT SAT Reasoning Tests • Critical Reading, Math & Writing (Each test scored on a 200 – 800 Scale) SAT Subject Tests • English, Social Studies, Math, Science, and Languages (200 – 800)
ACT • The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. • The Writing Test, which is optional (but recommended) measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. • Composite Scores range from 1 - 36

What’s the Formula to getting admitted to the competitive colleges? Unfortunately there is NO set formula College Needs Change from Year to Year
College Admissions Criteria • The pattern (# of yrs. in subject) and level (College prep, honors and/or AP) of academic courses. How rigorous is the course of study??? 2.Classroom Performance (GRADE POINT AVERAGE) 3. Academic Potential – Admission Tests (ACT or SAT) 4. Other considerations – references, activities, volunteer service, and/or class rank.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) • Information on FAFSA helps determine eligibility for federal and state financial aid • Applications submitted on or after Jan. 1st • For Cal Grants, FAFSA needs to be submitted by March 2nd • Attending college must have a FAFSA on file for any financial aid (including scholarships) • Private schools may require an additional financial aid profile (CSS) – check with individual colleges for due dates.
Grants • Money that does not have to be repaid • Usually based on financial need • Cal Grant – State Grant Program: Based on GPA, financial need, and other criteria – GPA Verification form due March 2nd • Pell Grants – Federal Grant Program: Based on financial need
Scholarships • Usually free money based on merit – good grades, high test scores, athletics, musical ability, community service and sometimes financial need • Private National, Private Local, Institution • SFHS College Center Publishes a list of available scholarships on an on-going basis (school website, college tab, scholarship listing)
Work Study & Loans • Work Study - Both Federal & College funded = students who qualify are assisted in finding a job on or off campus to help pay for college. • Loans – Money students borrow that must be repaid with interest.
