  3. Questions 2. How many of these things can happen when you smoke: a. hard to breathe b. makes it harder for the heart to work c. sores in the mouth d. smelly hands and hair ANSWER: All of them can happen when you smoke! Updated 2013

  5. Questions 4. What do you think happens to your skin if you smoke?a. Makes your skin look youngerb. Gives you lots of wrinklesc. Makes your skin get really dry ANSWER: b. Your skin will get really wrinkly and old-looking. Updated 2013

  6. What is in a Cigarette? • Plant Leaves (called “tobacco”) • Water • Lots of chemicals that can make you really sick Updated 2013

  7. What kinds of chemicals? Some of the chemicals in a cigarette can also be found in: Floor cleaner Bug sprays Rat Poison Paint stripper/nail polish remover Lighters Rocket fuel Car Batteries Car Exhaust Plastic Updated 2011

  8. What kinds of chemicals? • These chemicals are put in to change the cigarette • For example: -some chemicals make the cigarette burn longer -some chemicals make the expiry date later Updated 2013

  9. Types of Cigarette Smoke? 1. First-hand smoke 2. Second-hand smoke 3. Third-hand smoke Updated 2013

  10. First Hand Smoke • This is when you are the one who is smoking • The smoke from the cigarette goes right into your lungs – yuck! Updated 2013

  11. Second Hand Smoke • This is when someone else is smoking, and you breathe in the smoke that they blow out. • This is even more harmful than First Hand Smoke! Updated 2013

  12. Second-hand Smoke • Can cause breathing problems. • Can sometimes cause diseases that make it hard to breathe (called asthma). • Your heart has to work harder • Can make you really sick. Updated 2013

  13. Second-hand Smoke • Has even worse chemicals than 1st hand smoke • Why do you think this makes it even worse for people who smoke? Answer: People who smoke get both the first and the second hand smoke. They get double the chemicals! Updated 2013

  14. Latest and Newest...Third-hand Smoke What is it? It is the smoke that sticks to smokers' hair, clothing, furniture, curtains, carpets, or other surfaces. e.g. the smoke left on seats and cushions, or that scent you pick up in the elevator as the smoker comes back inside. Updated 2013

Third-hand Smoke • Third hand smoke sticks to things for a long time, even when there’s no more second hand smoke, and it’s easy for kids and babies to breathe it in • It has lots of bad chemicals that are dangerous and can cause cancer. Breathing air in a room today where people were smoking yesterday can be bad for our health. Updated 2013

  17. Questions 5. Do you think that if a mother smokes, her baby will probably smoke when they grow up to be a teenager? ANSWER: Yes! When a mom smokes, the baby is more likely to smoke when they get older. Updated 2013

  18. Questions 6. Do you think that people could live longer if they didn’t smoke? ANSWER: Yes! Lots of people that die from smoking could have lived longer if they didn’t smoke. Updated 2013

  19. Questions 7. What other problems can smoking do to your body? Do you think smoking can:A. make it harder to fall asleep?B. give tummy aches?C. make someone dizzy? ANSWER: All of these things can happen! Updated 2013

  20. Questions 8. Do you think it is easy for people to stop smoking once they start? ANSWER: Quitting smoking is REALLY, REALLY hard to do becausethere’s a chemical in cigarettes called nicotine that’s HIGHLY ADDICTIVE! It is much better to never start smoking! Updated 2013

  21. What does smoking do to the body? • Makes your hair and skin smell(the chemicals come out of your body through your pores) • Skin: lots of wrinkles, yellowing • Eyes: stinging feeling, cataracts (cloudy vision) • Brain: makes it hard to stop smoking Updated 2013

  22. What does smoking do to the body? • Nose: harder to smell things • Teeth: turns teeth yellow • Hands: makes hands feel cold and turns them yellow • Stinky breath • Cough Updated 2013

Long Term Consequences • CANCERMost lung cancer is caused by smoking cigarettes There are more than 43 chemicals in a cigarette that can cause cancer! • BreathingA lung disease caused Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is usually caused by smoking. It makes it really, really hard to breathe. Updated 2013

  25. Smoking ain’t no laughing matter Many scientists who study the effects of smoking say that it’s the single most preventable cause of death in the country! That’s about 3400 Albertans or 47 000 Canadians who die for an unnecessary reason EACH YEAR. Updated 2013

  26. It Costs A LOT of Money to Smoke! • Someone who smokes one pack of cigarettes a day can spend about $3000 to $4000/year and most people smoke about 16 cigarettes a day… • That is about equal to a trip to Disneyland! • Smoking costs the country about $18.5 BILLION per year Updated 2013

So, why do people smoke? • They might think it is “cool”. • - How many of you think it is cool to get sick? - How many of you think it is cool to make other people sick?- How many of you think it is cool to have smelly hair and smelly breath and yellow teeth? • Smoking isn’t cool; it makes your body sick and it can hurt other people too. So, why do people smoke? • Sometimes it’s really hard to stop. • What do you think you can do to help people stop?- if someone is trying to stop, tell them you think they are doing a great thing!- help keep their mind off of cigarettes; talk to them, play games with them(some people keep smoking because they’re bored!)   30. The MOST important things to know about smoking: • Smoking is not cool. It makes you smell, it makes your body sick, and it is really really hard to stop smoking… SO DON’T EVEN START! • It is really important to say “NO” if anyone ever tries to get you to smoke. • One of the best things you can do is to never start smoking! Keep your bodies healthy! • It IS cool to NOT smoke! Updated 2013
