  1. Section 5.1 & 5.2 Section 5.1: Decimal Notation and Rounding Section 5.2: Addition and Subtraction of Decimals

  2. Topics Covered • Identifying place value • Converting decimal numbers to fractions using the TI-34 • Ordering decimal numbers • Rounding Decimals • Adding and subtracting decimals with the TI-34 • Applications

  3. Identifying Place Value

  4. Examples 34.82 4.09284 58.211

  5. Converting Decimals to Fractions Step 1 The digits to the right of the decimal point become the numerator of the fraction. Step 2 The place value of the digit farthest to the right of the decimal point determines the denominator. Step 3 The whole-number part of the number is left unchanged. Step 4 Simplify the fraction to lowest terms, if possible.

  6. Examples: Write the decimals as proper fractions or mixed numbers and simplify.

  7. Converting Decimals to Fractions with the TI-34 To convert 4.16 to a mixed number; Enter 4.16 Press the [2nd] button Press the [ n/d ] button Press [enter] Use the [simp] button to simplify In order to write 4.16 as an improper fraction follow the above steps and then 6. Press the [2nd] button 7. Press the [U n/d ] button 8. Press [enter]

  8. Convert to an improper fraction: 1.9 • 11/10 • 11/100 • 19/10 • 19/100

  9. Convert to a fraction: -0.45 • -9/20 • 9/200 • 9/20 • -9/200

  10. Comparing Decimals Process: • Line up decimals according to place values • Starting at the left (and moving right), compare the digits in each corresponding place position • The first instance in which the digits differ determines the order of the numbers. The decimal having the greater digit is greater overall. Examples: 10.51 ____ 10.5098 -0.1291 ____ -0.129 0.7701, 0.7878, 0.7, 0.7373…

  11. Rounding Decimal Numbers • Procedure for Rounding Decimals; • Underline the digit being rounded • Look to the digit to the right of the underlined digit • If the digit is 5 or greater, add 1 to the underlined digit • If the digit is less than 5, don’t change the underlined digit • Discard any digits to the right of the underlined digit Examples: Try these: 4.359 ; to the nearest hundredth 16.004; to the nearest tenth -2.8592 ; to the nearest tenth -9.0955; to the nearest hundredth 21.9997 ; to the nearest thousandth

  12. Application #1 A normal human red blood cell count is between 4.2 and 6.9 million cells per microliter. A cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy has a red blood cell count of 2.85 million cells per microliter. How far below the lower normal limit is this?

  13. Application #2 A section of a bank statement is shown in the figure below. Find the mistake that was made by the bank.

  14. Application #3 Water flows into a pool at a constant rate. The water level is recorded at several 1-hr intervals. From the table, how many inches is the water level rising each hour? At this rate, what will the water level be at 1:00PM? At this rate, what will the water level be at 3:00pm?

  15. Application #4 A laptop computer was originally priced at $1299.99 and was discounted to $998.95. By how much was it marked down?

  16. Application #5 Find the lengths of the sides labeled x and y. Then find the perimeter. 4.875 ft 1.03 ft x 3.62 ft 3.62 ft y y 1.2 ft 1.6 ft
