EOC BELLRINGERDENOTATION & CONNOTATION • Denotation is the literal, dictionary meaning of a word. • Connotation is the emotional reaction a word may invoke when read or heard. • Decide whether the following words are examples of denotation or connotation: • In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy’s home is in a small town in Kansas. • In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy says, “There’s no place like home!” • That rat tried to get me to loan him my cell phone! • The rat chewed the charger cord to my cell phone! • If the sun comes out, the snow will melt. • The heavenly chocolate fudge seems to melt in my mouth!
